The reef is great too - make sure you go out on a boat....Tip, go on a smaller boat rather than the big Quicksilver boat that takes 450 people. That boat stops at the same site every day and the coral is pretty damaged. The smaller boats (that take around 130 people) can go to heaps more spots on the reef and the coral is in much better condition.

We're planning our honeymoon around cairns/port douglas too but in december. We've found a lot of great places but are having trouble deciding. Maybe we can swap ideas of places we find if you like. I spent 9 hrs over the last few days trawling through the net so I'm almost all Cairns'd out!

In Pt Douglas we stayed at the Regal which although smelt a bit funny (!) - maybe 'coz of the hot weather, we loved our room which had a spa in the balcony, and was nice and close to the main street (was just off it). It was also very close to the beach. The pool area was nice, and the service great. We liked that this hotel was just off the main street because although all tour places easily pick up from nearby hotels for day trips, we loved strolling the main street at night and choosing restaurants to eat at.
In Cairns we stayed at the Lakes Cairns Spa & Resort which we both LOVED. The place was a lot more classy in general. However we did need to hire a car for the time we were there (although there was a bus into the town center which prob ran quite often). But this place has 2 restaurants on site and 2-3 beautiful pools. It was more like a mini-village than a hotel i guess and great service also.
We found both these places very good price wise (and was recommended them by our travel agent).
Good luck with your choices!!

We have decided to go to Port Douglas for the first few days for pure relaxation then the last couple of nights go to Cairns for some shopping etc.
Cyndi i am so in the same place you are! I have looked at so many places they are all blurred into one now Will PM you what we have if you would like. I just have to finish the housework first!

We've never stayed at Port Douglas, but I've heard that the Radisson Treetops is beautiful. Hope that helps

We'v narrowed it down to about 10 possibilities but we are going in Dec so we had to rule out everything without aircon or with lots of kiddies! I just finished a 1 year stint working in a resort so I'm more looking for a quiet retreat or hotel.
Thanks for all the suggestions though, will check out

Let me know if I can help out with anything more, or if you need more ideas, as these ones were just off the top of my head!

We are looking at Cairns/Whitsundays/Port Douglas too. I don't know what your budget is like but my top picks would be:
Sea Temple Palm Cove
Sea Temple Port Douglas
Peppers Beach Club Port Douglas
Peppers Palm Cove
Peppers Palm Bay
And the winner of the most expensive but most beautiful resort is Bedarra Island
Just gorgeous, I wish I was on holiday right now.
