I used to live in Port Douglas and I would DEFINATELY stay there then in Cairns. Port Douglas is an hour drive north of cairns - stunning drive too along the beach cliff. Luxury accommodation I would recommend the Sheridan Mirage although it’s a 10/15min walk to the main street where all the restaurants and shops are, but the Sheridan has a mini bus that will take you to and from...also there are local buses that stop in at the resorts at scheduled times throughout the day to take people into town etc. There are lots of nice accommodation places though.

The reef is great too - make sure you go out on a boat....Tip, go on a smaller boat rather than the big Quicksilver boat that takes 450 people. That boat stops at the same site every day and the coral is pretty damaged. The smaller boats (that take around 130 people) can go to heaps more spots on the reef and the coral is in much better condition.

Hi,
We're planning our honeymoon around cairns/port douglas too but in december. We've found a lot of great places but are having trouble deciding. Maybe we can swap ideas of places we find if you like. I spent 9 hrs over the last few days trawling through the net so I'm almost all Cairns'd out!

Hi! We stayed in both Pt Douglas and Cairns for our Honeymoon.

In Pt Douglas we stayed at the Regal which although smelt a bit funny (!) - maybe 'coz of the hot weather, we loved our room which had a spa in the balcony, and was nice and close to the main street (was just off it). It was also very close to the beach. The pool area was nice, and the service great. We liked that this hotel was just off the main street because although all tour places easily pick up from nearby hotels for day trips, we loved strolling the main street at night and choosing restaurants to eat at.

In Cairns we stayed at the Lakes Cairns Spa & Resort which we both LOVED. The place was a lot more classy in general. However we did need to hire a car for the time we were there (although there was a bus into the town center which prob ran quite often). But this place has 2 restaurants on site and 2-3 beautiful pools. It was more like a mini-village than a hotel i guess and great service also.

We found both these places very good price wise (and was recommended them by our travel agent).

Good luck with your choices!!

Hi there smile.gif The further north you stay from Cairns, the classier, more luxurious and more expensive accomodation will be. If you're not concerned about money and want to stay somewhere really, really luxurious, look at the Sea Temple in Palm Cove. If you don't want to spend a fortune, the Roydon Beachfront Apartments or Beachfront Apartments on Trinity Beach (owned by same couple) are fantastic - we've stayed there half a dozen times and always get looked after really well, these apartments are beachfront and next door to each other.

We've never stayed at Port Douglas, but I've heard that the Radisson Treetops is beautiful. Hope that helps smile.gif

sorry I'm new to this and I have no idea what PM is! but I'd love to swap places smile.gif
We'v narrowed it down to about 10 possibilities but we are going in Dec so we had to rule out everything without aircon or with lots of kiddies! I just finished a 1 year stint working in a resort so I'm more looking for a quiet retreat or hotel.
Thanks for all the suggestions though, will check out smile.gif

smile.gif I am a Port Douglas girl, and I have to agree theres too much to choose from now. We stayed here for our wedding night and loved it. there is also all of these accomodation places. I would even look at holiday house rentals, as you can get some really nice ones around - here or here, Or if you want something right in the middle of town there is this one and this.
Let me know if I can help out with anything more, or if you need more ideas, as these ones were just off the top of my head!

We've decided to stay at Port Douglas for our honeymoon too, and have booked into the Sea Temple Resort for 6 nights, then Silky Oaks for 3 so we can experience the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree. I can't wait!! tongue.gif

Hello,

We are looking at Cairns/Whitsundays/Port Douglas too. I don't know what your budget is like but my top picks would be:

Sea Temple Palm Cove
http://palmcove.seat...om.au/index.cfm

Sea Temple Port Douglas
http://portdouglas.seatemple.com.au/

Peppers Beach Club Port Douglas
http://www.peppers.com.au/Beach-Club

Peppers Palm Cove
http://www.peppers.c...each-Club-&-Spa

Peppers Palm Bay
http://www.peppers.com.au/Palm-Bay

And the winner of the most expensive but most beautiful resort is Bedarra Island

Just gorgeous, I wish I was on holiday right now.
