I have noticed there are lots of questions about what is safe and not safe to eat and take during pregnancy. It get so confusing and I thought it may be a good idea to have a thread with links to information.

I'll start with some I have found

Those links are good Chris, maybe we could look at getting something like this pinned for everyone?

That's what I was thinking too Amanda. Any idea how I could get that done?

ETA I have pm'd Tim and asked him if he would pin this thread.

I think you can also report the thread. I did that with the contact list one and think that's how it ended up pinned (although other people may have requested it being pinned too)

Great links and would be well worth pinning

In that theme if you get advice like l'm getting "of course it's safe, it's a natural product", no being natural does not automatically make it safe. DDT, cyanide and heroin are just a few things that are "natural" made from plants yet we know are not safe to take (anytime not just during pregnancy). Being from a naturally derived source does not automatically make it safe please check it out further (with your Doctor or Pharmacist). Herbs/suplements can have effects on prescribed medication or not be safe to use during pregnancy.

Sorry this is a topic of frustration for me but l'll get off my soap box now, I am an environmentalist and can't endorse organic or using natural products enough just use with care.

heroin is NOT natural!!

It is a processed product! The poppy is the source and is natural, opium is also natural, but heroin is processed.

As poppy is to heroin, so sugar cane is to jello bean.

Sorry, had to point that out~

Sorry if it sounded like you could collect herion directly off the Poppy plant, as common with other "naturally" derived supplements the plant (or part of plant) is processed in a variety of ways to produce the end product. With the opium Poppy species morphine, codeine and heroin are just some of the products that can be derived from the plant.

I was just trying to point out that l've had quite a few people recommend to me to use this or that supplement to help with fluid retention, bloating, sleep issues or cramps since l became pregnant and the catch cry they are using to say it's safe "it's Ok it's natural".

Does anyone know anything about using peppermint oil during pregnancy? I have some of L'Occitane's Almond Supple Skin Oil, which has essential oils of peppermint, immortelle and palmarosa added, and wondering if this is safe to use as a stretch mark preventative?

I thought that freshly sliced ham from a proper Delicatessan was ok? and ham sliced straight off the bone too? I love ham and miss it badly!

As with soft cheeses, I never thought of Ricotta and Fetta... spewin! I've bought some Ricotta and wanted to make my fave Canelloni! sad.gif

Is philadelphia cream cheese ok? Anyone know? I have some of those little tubs of them, so wouldn;t be like its opening a whole container and keeping it in thr fridge and using bit by bit...

Just got my double lines on HPT (x2) this weekend so still have to get Dr's final confirmation that I am up the duff but don't want to risk eating stuff I shouldn't just in case...i have this fridge full of food that i potentially can't eat (we weren't planning on getting pregnant quite yet - its all good though! V. excited!)

Also since painkillers are not ok and I suffer from headaches very often - including now - anyone know of any natural headache remedies that are ok to use during pregnancy??

Big big thanks!!

Mel, you are allowed to have panadol, I think I had panadol twice throughout my pregnancy, and that was when I was very very bad! Fluids I found helped with all my headaches.

I was eating dips and stuffw hilst pregnant, but really I think it was only in the few weeks before I had Kaele.
