The Katathani is where we stayed! It is a gorgeous resort, we really loved it there. (Although we didn't like being the only couple not evacuated in the middle of a tsunami warning the first night we were there! ) blink.gif
It is so nice, that we couldn't hold it against them.

Toffee, I've seen your posts about the Katathani biggrin.gif

What kind of room did you stay in?

Does Kata have nice shops and restaurants within walking distance or did you go into Patong for that?

Is Patong really full on? Is it comparable to Kuta in Bali?

The hotels I'm tossing up over is Katathani in Kata and Banthai in Patong.

See I thought it would be okay staying right in all the action for a week and then we head to Phi Phi for ultimate relaxation biggrin.gif

I'm waiting on my travel agent to get back to me with quotes on different room types because that will be a big factor too biggrin.gif

Thanks for your help!

What kind of room did you stay in? we had the junior suite

Does Kata have nice shops and restaurants within walking distance or did you go into Patong for that? no its further south than all of that, but the resort runs a free shuttle bus into patong every night & picks you up around midnightish. Tuk tuks are pretty cheap too. They also run shuttle buses into phuket town every day around lunch time. The nice thing about Kata is its a bit away from the main stuff of patong & Karon but its still really easy to get in & see those things. Its a bit more romantic in the honeymoon sense than the hustle & bustle of patong. The resort pretty much has an entire beach to itself & its great. The resort has loads of different restaurants & food choices which were all beautiful as well but you'll find lots of great places to try.

Is Patong really full on? Is it comparable to Kuta in Bali? Never been to Kuta so i can't comment on that one. Patong is really full on, in terms of everyone's trying to sell you something & buying DVD's out of back alleys, but its part of the experience & you can always just say no thanks & keep walking. We bought some great stuff over there. My Hubby's fake tag watch is an amazing replica & its still working nearly 6 months later.
As for the sex trade, its up to you whether you choose to walk into the vneue or not. It is kind of amusing when the man standing outside shows you a menu that has different show's on it.

The hotels I'm tossing up over is Katathani in Kata and Banthai in Patong.
Personally i think Kata may be more romantic on your honeymoon, but if you want lots of action, stay in patong. we wanted a very relaxing holiday after the wedding & the house building, & didn't want the action everyday.

See I thought it would be okay staying right in all the action for a week and then we head to Phi Phi for ultimate relaxation We did a day trip to Phi Phi, its not as developed at Phuket & the tsunami knocked a lot of it down. There were only a couple of hotels there & its always got lots of daytrippers. it was still undergoing a lot of rebuilding when we were there. Wippy just back from thailand & i know she went to Phi Phi, maybe check on its progress with her? Still lovely & gorgeous but just not as rebuilt, which can be a good thing depending on your preferences.

I'm waiting on my travel agent to get back to me with quotes on different room types because that will be a big factor too The junior suite was lovely, beach views every morning, nice big king size bed, big bath & big shower (seperate to each other)
Thanks for your help! Not a problem, anytime!

Best. Reply. Ever. Thanks so much toffee wub.gif

In one sense I want to be away from it all and the other I'd like to just walk out of my hotel into all the action, markets, bars etc.

Katathani seems so relaxing and just gorgeous. The Banthai has a swim up pool bar.

You can see the bind I'm in! laugh.gif

This is a great thread! I'm all excited now... I'm staying at Katathani from 12 November for 9 nights!

I anyone able to tell me what kind of clothes you would wear to dinner or at night? Is it just casual everywhere all the time?

some are casual & there are 2 or 3 restaurants at the resort that are more formal - ie men can't wear shorts, there legs must be covered.

Take a mix of both & your covered smile.gif

& take loads of sunscreen!

We are staying in Patong for our honeymoon.

We have stayed in Patong 3 years ago, and loved it! It is fantastic, we spent the days either in the resort, on the beach or doing a day tour.

We are staying in Patong again. We considered staying away from Patong and travelling in, but we like that we can go to the night life, sit in a bar and drink, watch the action around us and only have to walk back to our hotel.

As for the sex bars, it is completly personal choice as to whether you go in or not, noone forces anyone in, and from outside the bars it isn't really in your face... except for the cards they flash in front of you telling you how much for the "ping pong show" etc. When you walk past the bars, there is usually a pole dancing lady in sight through the door to try to entice people in, but she is always wearing underwear... not naked.

We wore jeans, plain pants, skirts for going out for dinner etc. I wouldn't say we got overly dressed up at all!
