We have two puppies. Sam is about 6 (DOB unknown) and is a Tenterfield Terrier crossed with Kelpie (we think...). Simba 2 and a terrier cross. The best description I can give is that he looks like Benji! Little girls adore him.

We got both of them through a local group (ARF) who rescue dogs from the pound (our beautiful Sam was meant to be put down the day he was rescued!) and keep them at their homes till they find a new forever home.

They are v v spoiled tongue.gif We adore them.

Only last night Monty set the world record for clearing a rental car..
I opened the house, and he bolted out, jumped into the back passanger door.. and the thru into the front.. Tooted the horn with his butt turning around.. then exited thru the front passanger door..

What a performance.. Got to love this tho.. heheh

Our little boy is a Maltese/Shitzu/Poodle called "Harvey". We bought him on the day that Jon and I moved in together. He's now 3 and is a very spoilt little boy!

PS. Jon even gives him pocket money, for keeping watch on the house!

We have a kelpie X and she's about 2-2 and a half years old. We got her from people who save them from the pound and foster them out til they can find a full time home for them. When we got her she was terrified all the time. You'd go over to pat her and she'd cringe away and wet herself she was so scared. Now she loves us to bits and we love her smile.gif Her name is Gobalino from these Story Time Books/Tapes we used to listen to all the time. She answers to Gobby, Dumb Dog (when we sing the song from 'Annie') and just about everything else smile.gif

We have a beautiful pure bred german shepherd, shes 7 next month, her name is Keita. She tells me if the phone has been ringing when I'm out. If I come home from shopping, she goes to the telephone and licks it to let me know that someone called when I was out, I just say to her "any messages secretary".

She is very gentle, we leave her with our newborn niece. With small dogs, such as her maltese friend, she gets down on her stomach to be on his level, so not to overpower the small dog.

I used to have chickens loose, and when they would lay their eggs, Keita would find and bring them to me in her mouth without breaking them. When we raised some baby chickens we made a little see-through window in the incubator so she could watch them and be their mum.

I think a pets love for their owner is so special, they have a short life, but, a quality life and the memories are forever.

Just wanted to say that it doesn't matter how gentle a dog is or how much you trust them, children should NEVER be left alone with dogs...

Love and trust are human emotions... dogs run on instinct. And if their instinct is to protect their own selves or property from someone they see as being below them in the pack (eg children), then your trust in them won't stop that happening. Add to that the fact that children are as unpredictable as animals and can unintentionally pull at fur etc, and it can be a lethal combination.

I'm sorry, but I've had alot of experience with dogs and I just can't let this one go... I'm like a dog with a bone, I guess you could say!

I have to agree whole heartedly with Jo. No-one in their rightmind leaves a baby or yound child with a dog unsupervised no matter how gentle they are.

As Jo said adog will act on instinct. My family bred Border Collies for years a Pets-as-Therapy dogs and even THOSE dogs are not left with children unattended!!!! Let along babies. I really do think it is common sense.

I am just writing about my own experience with my dog, who I love very much, I am not advising anyone to leave their dog with their children attended.

I guess I'll have to ask my other best friend about this one, who is a dog behaviorist and trainer.

Thanks for your thoughts though.

Sorry, Grace, loving a dog isn't about trusting them. Loving a dog is about being responsible for them, and making sure they dont' get into a bad situation.

Little kids and babies have no idea when they are hurting someone or something. It only takes a second for your niece to seriously hurt your pup, and for him to automatically defend himself, with tragic consequences for both.

I love my dog. I love my daughter. I supervise closely when both are together. AND they love each other.

Cheers

Di
