I went to Hawaii last year - it's so beautiful, I loved every minute!
We stayed in Waikiki for 6 nights, then flew to The Big Island for 3 nights, staying in Kona, before heading back to Honolulu for one more night.
We drove right around the two islands, and it is such a scenic beautiful place.
In Waikiki we stayed at the Radisson, and in Kona we stayed at the Kanaloa at Kona - don't stay there unless you rent a car because it's in the middle of nowhere! In fact you need a car on the Big Island period!
I'd recommend them both, they were both great!
In Honolulu you have to go to the Pearl Harbor - and of course a trip to the North Shore!
And on The Big Island there are the active volcanos to see!

How should we get to the main island? Fly? I definitely want to visit the main island and see a big volcano. Also I want to see a really nice, tall waterfall.. and we're thinking of doing a tv/movie tour as well

We were only there for a week, and we hired a car for 2 days. First day we had the car we went to Pearl Harbour and a drive up that coast line, then on the 2nd day of the car hire, we went to the other side of the island. It was great.
You have to do Germanine's Luau (SP?) on one night.
Also, dont book any tours from people that have stalls set up around the place and give you brochures. They arent the real deal. Book these directly through your hotel or book them through the breakfast that you'll get invited to on the day after you arrive. (this is usually set up through the people that do your transfers from the airport)
Also, if the show is still on when you go, there's a magic show at the beachcomber hotel. he's an illusionist and he was fantastic.
Eat at the Cheesecake factory at least once if not more! Drooling just thinking about how good this food was. (On the main stretch in waikiki)
If you're interested in shopping, go to the ala moana (SP) shopping centre.
Ill try and dig up some other things that we did and post again!

Ala Moana is the main shopping centre - catch the number 8 bus (there are other buses but this is the main one). It has nice eateries as well as nice shops.
Pearl Harbour is a must of course. Oh and the Polynesian Cultural Centre is pretty good too.
Empress - If you want to go on a movie tour then go to Kualoa Ranch (http://www.kualoa.com/) cause' they filmed Jurassic Park there (and 50 First Dates and a bit of Lost).
Waimea Falls Park has some nice waterfalls and they have a cliff diving show. Quite nice.
I stayed at the Resortquest Waikiki Beach Hotel - the rooms were ok but the view from every room is great as it's right across the road from the beach.
Let me know if you have any more questions!
