I know this sound really bad - but - we wanted a jazz band so that we didn't have to put up with those kinds of songs! I hate the nutbush and the macarena and the bustop!! etc!! And who cares about the hokey pokey!!! (Is that really what it's all about???!!!! tongue.gif )

Sorry guys!!

They just reminded us of a 18th birthday party! Our thought was - anyone can have a dj, at any event - but for a classy event like a formal wedding we thought a jazz band would be better!

All those songs are sooooo banned from our wedding!!

Oh I would have to agree! But we won't be having a jazz band, we'll have a dj or live rock band (a band that can do both probably) and make sure they don't play any of those songs!

As far as songs go, Animal by Def Leppard!

Definitely Love Shack (nice one Alison) - it is my H2B's "family song" - gets them all up and singing and dancing - it will be a highlight of our wedding for sure!

Really, anything by Wham! or B-52's.

Hayley - in many ways I agree that songs like the Nut Bush and the Macarena might not be suitable for a formal wedding, but I went to a wedding last year that had a jazz band and only the older people were dancing because none of the younger people knew how to dance to that kind of music. It may be a sad reflection of today's society, but it's the truth.

Very true Penelope!

And we wouldn't be having a jazz band if it wasn't for our upbringing! Our whole family had been brought up with that sort of music and dancing like that for years, so our family and friends will feel comfortable with this kind of music, and truthfully - if they weren't too bad!! We wanted a classy wedding - and that what we are going to have!! tongue.gif

And sorry girls but the chicken dance and maccarena just doesn't ooze class to me! tongue.gif

Plus, H2B and I used to do Ballroom dancing together and we want to do some of our moves! I also have some of my dancing friends coming - so they definetly wont feel out of place!

I guess it just works for us!

I love Sinatra, Simone, Cole, Armstrong, Fitzgerald.... but very few attending my wedding like this type of music - except for the very old ones. So I'm saving these great songs for my private pleasure in my own time, and wanted something that would make all of my guests comfortable and which would encourage them to let their hair down (hence my question).

The one thing I don't want to see is just a couple of confident people on the dance floor - I want to see everyone dancing either very well or very badly but mainly with a smile, enjoying themselves. I wouldn't know how to do the bustop or the nutbush if my life depended on it but if it is what the people want.... who am I to argue!

I read and then replied! so yes to all the above songs.

Hayley, I know what you mean about the chicken dance, But as nice and classy as a jazz band will be it may get... boring! unsure.gif

I know that there is nothing worse than being at a wedding and being bored!

I probably won't be 'love shack shimmeying' on the dance floor but i can see my rellos!
I see the reception as the 'party' and to me 'party' means just that.
The classy, jazzy stuff will happen at home during the nibblies after the ceremony and before the reception.

just another pov. biggrin.gif

Exactly my point of view!!! I think we have decided to get a small jazz ensemble for the start, and then get a DJ to play jazz/big band/crooners stuff, because although I am quite happy blaming it on the boogie at other people's weddings, H2B, myself, and about 60 of the guests are classical musicians, and there is such a cringe factor to that kind of music.

I can't see how good dance music and jazz can get boring!! Also, we have some elderly relatives who would be absolutely horrified if we started zorba-the-greeking around the restaurant....

Maybe it's just me...

Hayley - I used to do ballroom dancing, and am definitely dragging fiance along to learn some moves!! We are doing our first dance to Fred Astaire's Cheek to Cheek - the height of style!!

On the other hand - for those who want the cheesy classics - the good S Club 7 and Steps songs are so good to get people up - everyone knows the tunes and words. Wham and ABBA never go amiss either!

My Charona - The Knack
Cotton Eyed Joe - Red Nex

Not necessarily what I would play at my wedding, but just another couple of choices for ya. biggrin.gif

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

When I had my 21st (4 years ago!) I started off the night with the 'Hokey Pokey'!!! It's kinda always been labeled my dance ever since I was the hit on the dance floor as a young flowergirl. It did get everyone dancing for the rest of the night though.... even people who usually refuse to dance!

I kinda agree with Hayley, we wont be having Nutbush, Macarena or YMCA etc either. We feel as though are have been warn out a little and H2B hates them.

We are having a Dj and will have a mixture of music. I like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra etc but also more modern music. A couple of songs we WILL be having are.........
500 miles - Proclaimers
The Gambler - Kenny Rodgers
Battle of New Orleans - Jonny Horton.

These are songs that will get both family and friends off those chairs. Majority will be 60s, 70s and 80's i guess but i have a couple of newer songs that will be played also like Murder on the dance floor (love it) biggrin.gif

I will be giving the DJ a huge list so if the moods not happening and not many people dancing i will ask him to maybe change or let him put in some of his own suggestions.

I reckon Elvis always gets people dancing. All the youngs ones know it and the oldies love it so Bring on the King! Hound Dog, Wooden Heart, Jail house Rock.

We are having a real mish mash of mostly 60's 70's 80's a bit of ninety and some new stuff.

Should just play Mix 106! hehehehehe

Its your wedding, have the music you want.

Cheers,

Amanda
