Baby locked alone in childcare centre
February 17, 2004

AN investigation has been launched and two workers sacked after a 14-month-old boy was abandoned at a childcare centre south of Melbourne.

The mother of the child arrived at the Beach Babies childcare centre at Mornington to pick up her son on February 9 and found the centre closed – with her son locked inside.

The woman called for help from neighbours who were about to break in when they found a side door was unlocked.

Police arrived at the centre after 6pm (AEDT) to find mother and child had been reunited.

The Department of Human Services has launched an investigation into the incident and say the centre could face prosecution or closure if they are found to have broken the law.

Brighter Futures Family Services, which runs the centre, has apologised for the incident.

"Centre management have expressed their deep regret at the incident and as a result the two staff members involved were immediately dismissed," a spokesman for the company said.

All centre staff had now been "rebriefed" on the company's risk management procedures, the spokesman said

I am going to ask a dumb question here. What time to childcare centres normally close, I thought it was 6 or 7pm?

It is just scary as the police arrived at this one at 6pm. Shouldn't they have still been there? It wasn't like the mother was really late or anything.

Unbelievable! Maybe I've got this wrong, but dont child care centres have sign out sheets? (those that I have picked kids up from have). Wouldnt the workers check that all kids had been collected? This is just insane.

How on earth could something like that happen? I'm glad the little boy is ok, it could have been a lot worse! The poor thing must have been so scared.

That is absolutely disgusting!

I can't believe that a childcare worker would do that. Normally they go into that field because they LOVE kids.

Closing time for daycare depends on the daycare. Some close at 5, some at 5:30, some at 6, the rare one later than that.

Cheers

How could you lock up a centre and not have checked in every room that all the children had gone home. I would presume that the women left at the centre we only young.....

Not good enough no matter how they try to justify it

Having worked in childcare I just dont understand how this could have happened.
There are sign in sheets, and when the kids are all moved into the one room at the end of the night, the kids should all be checked off to make sure who is/should be there.

I am in shock, completely disgraceful.

The childcare centre that Clayton goes to has a sign in and out sheet for each room. When the rooms get to a certain level they merge (kindy and preschool) (baby, todler and pre-kindy) when those groups dwindle a but more they all move into one room (normally the baby room for safety reasons). If you have picked up your child and forgotten to sign your child out, be 110% certain that you will get a phone call. I know because I have had it happen twice when my grand-mother has picked Clayton up for me, she has fogotten to sign him out and when they move rooms they ring the parents of the kids that are "missing" and check to see if they have been picked up. I thought it was a bit silly, but now I feel reasured that they check up and are so carefull with my son and his whereabouts.
Sorry for any typos, I have a dislocated shoulder nerve.

That's bizarre!

As others have said, when I worked in childcare, all the kids ended up in one room at the end of the night - I just don't understand how you could miss one!

The poor mother must have been beside herself.
