I have not had any luck with either my hair or makeup trials, and with only six weeks until the wedding I am starting to freak out. I haven't been well these past few months so I haven't handled either situation very well because I find it so hard to keep from bursting into tears.

I took a photo of the hairstyle I want to my stylist, with the realistic expectation that the end result is not going to look exactly the same as what is in the pic but should look something similar. It was just meant to be nice soft waves to frame my face, nothing too formal. What the stylist produced was nothing at all like the pic, just masses of stiff hairspray-saturated curls. I felt like Shirley Temple, and I looked ridiculous.

Yesterday I took a pic to my beautician to show her an example of what colours I mostly use on the rare occasion that I wear makeup. What she did to my face next was ghastly. She applied so much foundation and loose powder in shades too pale for my face (because she said she was trying to blend it with the lighter skin on my chest), so I looked like I was dead, and also the powder was so badly applied that my whole face looked powdery.

I was looking at my reflection in the mirror thinking "oh okay... she'll fix that up" but she didn't. And when I told her my face was too pale she just brushed some bronzing powder over the top instead of starting afresh.

I don't cope with stress, and I was getting very stressed very quickly. To top it off, I had my mother sitting there saying how nice it looked unsure.gif but she has never really worn much makeup herself so she has absolutely no idea about how to apply makeup or use colours effectively. I know Mum was trying to be kind and helpful, but she was telling me it looked good when I knew it looked really bad.

Then I thought, well maybe it's just the lighting in the salon, so I'll just go home and have another look and think about it. But when I looked in the mirror at home I was horrified and I couldn't wipe the makeup off quickly enough.

I live in a country area so there aren't that many beauticians around and now there is so little time left to get these things sorted.

Does anyone here live in Western Vic who can point me in the right direction to good hair and makeup artists?

Oh honey, I don't really have any solution except to say that I understand where you're coming from. I'm not big on hair and make-up either and but I do know what I like, my trial is this Saturday and I won't be pushed into something I'm not 100% comfortable with. Sometimes hairdresses etc can be so pushy and snobby that they end up telling you what you want rather then listening to you. You need to be very firm and very direct, and have the guts to say if your not getting what you want, you are after all paying for their services and the customer is always right. I can only suggest that if you have friend who's good with hair and make-up that you get her to do your's for the wedding, I know it's not the same but you might get a better result because you'll be able to tell them honestly if it's not what you want. Hopefully one of the other girls can reccomend someone, I'm sorry if I'm not being very helpful.
Married 8th October 2005! I will love you today, tomorow, always!

Hi Jane, thank you so much for replying smile.gif I do feel a little bit better today and I have spoken to a beautician who may be able to help but she's got another wedding to do on the same day and it all depends on how early she will be able to finish the other wedding party as to whether she can do mine.

My photographer wants me ready quite early because the ceremony is so late in the afternoon, and she is worried about there not being enough light for lots of photos after the ceremony so this gives the beautician less time to get everyone done.

At least the photographer said she knows a few good contacts if I have any more problems.

I have a trial with a different hairdresser on Monday, she came with recommendations and she's not one to mince words or tell me that style looks great if it really looks totally crap laugh.gif

Hi,

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. Where abouts in Vic are you? I'm in Ballarat.

What I would suggest is visting as many different hairdressers as you need to before the wedding to find someone who understands just what you want and is willing to listen to you. It might cost a bit more but at least you will feel good about your hair!

As far as makeup is concerned, is there a friend or maybe a bridesmaid who is really good at doing makeup? Perhaps if you went to the chemist and got some advice on which makeup is best, then you could practice either doing it yourself or having a good friend do it for you? Or maybe even the staff at the pharmacy might do it, I've heard of several chemists that do makeovers, etc.

Good luck, hon. Try not to stress too much, I will come and do it myself if you need me to!!

Hi Rosy smile.gif

I'm in Camperdown, so not far from you! *waves*

I'm booked for a hair trial on Monday with a new stylist, and I phoned my local pharmacy today and they have a beauty therapist, so I've booked in for Thursday smile.gif

So I may be saved! I did a yellow pages search for beauticians and there are alot more in the western districts than I realised, especially around Timboon etc.

I'll keep you posted, thank you so much for the offer, I might just take you up on it if everything goes pear-shaped! laugh.gif

We're practically neighbours!! Well, H2B's family live in Lismore, so very close to you. So we're not really neighbours, but you know what I mean... laugh.gif

So glad everything is working out so far.

Yep...I had a pretty horrible make up trial....
the lady didn't listen to anything I said and did what she wanted....the colour wasn't right for my skin and the foundation was so thick that it was cracking and the eyes weren't even the same...I have a picture of it actually....

eeek!

I had someone else do a trial who turned me down at first because she had another wedding on, but I was desperate and seen as the first wedding was in the morning and mine was afternoon she decided to fit me in.

I was much happier with her job...

here and here

My suggestion is to just keep looking until you find someone you like....don't settle for second best....if all else fails...buy some really nice makeup and do it yourself....I know I would have liked the way I did my own makeup better than the first trial i got...

I'm glad I found out when I did and that I didn't leave it til the week before ohmy.gif BTW looking at your pics, what gorgeous shoes you chose! Where did you get them from? Not that I need to find wedding shoes, I just have a shoe fetish I think ohmy.gif

Oh dear, poor Witchie laugh.gif that's why we call them "trials" eh?

Well, good news, had another makeup trial today, better than the first, there are a few things that need tweaking though, it's just a pity the makeup artist can't perform real miracles laugh.gif

I'll have another trial in a couple of weeks with the hair done first and then the makeup.... dunno if I'll ever be brave enough to post the pics but we'll see rolleyes.gif

Took me 3 go's to get make-up how I wanted it, (with 3 different people). I think you just have to keep trying till you're happy.

My hair trial wasn't good, but really helped me figure out what I wanted and, as it was my regular hairdresser, I went back with a better idea and pictures. Will have another trial next week to finalise things.

Really? Okay, now I don't feel so bad about it all.... at first I thought it was just that my expectations were too high. I'm going to try one more makeup artist then, just so I don't settle for something less just because I'm in a panic to book someone.

I can relate to your misery! I had my makeup trial done last night, and it wasnt all too good. She put foundation which was too dark for my complexion. It looked like i had spent too much time in the sun. i told her i wanted green and gold eyeshadow i even showed her picture and then i get dark greyish green eyeshadow with like brown not gold!!

Oh well, its quite disappointing because it isnt easy to find one that is good.

Oh well, and the hung begins.........again...........

Well girls, I woke up this morning and my first thought was about yesterday's makeup trial and I've decided I'm not at all happy with it. I am so tempted to do my own, just need to invest in some really good cosmetics and practice practice practice!

I'll post a link in my sig later with some pics. I've concluded that the makeup is too heavy and the makeup artist got too carried away with bronzing powder, so in different kinds of light my face is different colours sad.gif

All I want is a fresh glow to my face, not heavily made up sad.gif

I have booked with my regular hair dresser for the day, but haven't had a trial yet. I will try in October... and if they don't do what I want, I will be going elsewhere and cancelling my appointment.

I'm also in ballarat. Let us know how you go!!
