As you all know i still don't have my main album.

We've just phoned the photographer as its now been 3 months this month since we did our final planning session. She said that it would take 2 to 3 months to finish as we're having a mixture of both normal photo's and digital, but mainly digital work being done.

She said to my husband that they were only a quarter of the way through, which sent Mark into a tail spin. She then said well you have the option of buying a blank digital album, i.e. an album with no photo's in it which is part of your package, you can buy your negatives, and the layout that i created for you and take it elswhere.

If they've started the album, how can they now just stop the process and just give us negatives and take it somewhere else. Which leads me to believe that they havn't started our ablum at all and they are just leading us on.

a girl at work used her, and she's been married for a year and she dosn't have her photo's she's only got her proofs. her sister in law has been married for 2 years and dosn't have her album either.

They at least have their proof albums, i don't have anything, we had to hand our proofs back in so they could do the album, and i'm scared that if i push her i won't have anything at all, and she's got all of our money. we've paid her close to $6,000 (this includes our DVD as well, which we don't have either). We've still got another $2,000 to pay her on completion.

Please give me ideas on what to do, to get my album.

thanks.

I'd be a little concerned - particularly as they claim to have only done 25% of the work.

On a positive note, the three months notice often takes into account the fact that they may be running behind (wedding photography is seasonal) from other jobs. What I am trying to say is that it's possible that they didn't even touch your album until the last four weeks of that three months - meaning 25% represents one month's work, not three. Under this scenario, your album may "only" take a further three months rather than nine! ph34r.gif

Try and get a commitment from them in writing - and call them on the exact day for which they make this commitment etc. This is what the banks do when you are behind in your mortgage (so I'm told blink.gif ) and it works. Hopefully they'll get sick of you nagging and will put you at the top of the list (the noisy cog often gets the most oil).

Is it an option to take the work elesewhere? Maybe, it depends on how much it will cost you to do this and also the challenge will be to find a studio willing and able to take on the work of another. And the clock will be reset again (another three months potentially).

If they are a member of the AIPP it may be worthwhile giving them (the AIPP) a call to see if they can apply some pressure. Although to be fair, I wouldn't go down this route until the studio has well and truly failed to meet a revised commitment. At this stage they have only just passed the three month mark and it may be possible that the final 75% will be ready in a month.

Keep on their back and try and get commitments is my best advice.

Good luck and let this be a lesson to those who are negotiating with photographers or plan to in the future - GET COMMITMENTS ON TIMELY SUPPLY OF THE ALBUM.

mark's spoken to her again, and this is the option that we've now got.

Our original package was $4,500, which included DVD. this includes an album to the value of $990 with a limited amount of photo's of various sizes.

We've since paid her $150 for the album layout, which she has created.

We've also paid her a further $2,500 to pay for half of our album, which we have now upgraded from our original package to be bigger, and includes mainly digital work, with some normal photo's in there.

We are yet to pay the final instalment of $2,000.

She has now said that we can have the album from our original package (no digital just the stock standard 20 sides with so many photo's), the negatives will cost us $1,600. Which means that technically she should give us back $900.

We've phoned a friend of ours who've we met at the penrith bridal faire and he's said that he will do our digital book, for about $2,500 and it shouldn't take very long as its the quiet season for wedding at the moment.

Should we accept this offer, or just say look give us a date of when the album will be finished.

I don't want to start any kind of action with her, because i'm scared i will end up with nothing, i'd rather get all my stuff that i'm entitled to, and then do something about it. The other 2 girls involved with her as well, are wanting to do the same thing.

I'm so confused, I can't stop crying, i just want my photo's.

PS - she's also had the hide to say that we aren't paying top dollar for what we are getting so really we should be patient and she's the one doing us the favour as she's not making any money from us.

$9,150 - if thats not top dollar, i'd hate to think what is.

I can't believe the attitude - If I was receiving that sort of money you would have had the album in three weeks!

It's a tough call. I'd be inclined to get a final, no-nonsense, realistic date for completion.

If that date is acceptable (and you think they can deliver) I'd be inclined to stick with them.

If the date is too far off (or you don't trust them) - your other plan sounds OK to me.

If you do decide to go with plan B, just make sure you thouroughly reconcile your likely costs (prints, albums, extra pages etc) and get a firm quote from your friend - I'd hate to see your budget blow-out from the high price you have already paid.

I just can't believe the poor service that some places appear to dish up when you invest soooo much dough. I honestly don't know how some places get their business.

Don't be too sad - at least you have some images from your friends (I saw your link), I know they're not pro but at least it's something to remember.

I hope you don't mind me commenting however how about turning up at her studio and as politely as possible sorting it out.

It would be much harder for her to fob you off or be rude to your face. I would try & keep the peace as much as possible until you got all your photos and then speak to the Dept of Fair Trading or someone (Current Affair) to complain.

Good luck with it all, I can only imagine the nightmare sad.gif

thats the problem, they don't have a studio anymore, she meet us in starbucks to do our album layout.

when we initially went with them they were on parramatta road and had been for nearly 10 years. i quite frequently travel on parramatta road, and have noted that they have been there for years and years.

anyway 2 months maybe after we booked, there was a for lease sign up in the studio. she told us that they wanted a studio in paddington because thats where her clientelle is.

anyway 13 months later, still no studio, apparently working out of home, and in september when we picked up our proofs, we were overseas for our honeymoon, she told us that she no longer does weddings anymore because - there isn't any money in it.

By the sounds of your email and the exorbitant amount of money you have paid on photos (this is definitely top dollar) I would be going directly to the dept of fair trading with the other two complainants. At least that way it may convince her to hurry up and complete your albums.

If you are very worried about her not giving you the photos back then just go with the second option of having someone else do up your album. It looks like she is trying to get out of doing the work now that she has your money.

Janine,

I was just reading your post and cannot believe what you have been going thru.. My heart truly goes out to you its just so unbelieveable you wouldn't even wish it on your worst enemy..

I can't believe she actually said to you that you weren't paying top dollar and you should be patient.. That is just so unbelievable I can't put it into words how flabbagastered (sp?) I am.. $9000 is top doller, and you should have had you album a month after the wedding at least..

I just wanted to offer you some support and if you ever want to talk please feel free to PM or email me. I would be more than happy to chat to you...

take care and let us know how you go
Melissa xx

P.S. I have read your story and looked at your pictures and can I just say that you looked absolutely stunning and its one of the most gorgeous weddings i have ever seen...

We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned,

This all sounds frighteningly similar to my experience and we weren't paying as much as you (no DVD either). $9K is about the most I have ever heard of someone paying for wedding pics - why on earth did you have to pay anything over and above your orginal package - $2.5K seems like a hell of a lot for an upgrade - I am not trying to criticise or judge, it's just that this lady seems like she has tried to milk you for all you are worth, because she knows you will be reluctant to do anything because, as yu say, you may end up with nothing.

With our shonk oops I mean photographer, we did take it to Fair Trading and we also got our solicitor to write a letter. I was like you hun, crying, shaking, extremely stressed and anxious. It was probably one of the most awful things i have been through - I was a wreck.

I think you have already paid her too much!! And I don't think you should let her get away with it.

Janine, I have just re-read my post and want to re-iterate that I am in no way trying to judge you - what you choose to spend is your business.

But I have been where you are, and I know that these photographers know they have you over a barrel - ie they have something you desperately want and can't get from anyone else. In our case, we didn't have a video/DVD, so our pics was our only record. We ended up with our album, and luckily had our proofs as well so had to get digital reprints from those. The photographer has well and truly vanished from the face of the earth so too bad if we wanted to find him and offer to buy negs or get professional reprints mad.gif .

I just think that you have paid top dollar and you should be expecting service the exact opposite of what you are receiving. I want to wish you lots of luck with it all - I know how truly awful it is! It makes me angry what some people will do to other people for bloody money sometimes!

Oh - I had my story published in the Sunday Herald, so maybe let the newspapers know as well - they often like a shonky supplier story as weddings are such big business.

not taken like that at all hun.

when we had our initial interview with her, we specifically told her we wanted a digital album, not just an ordinary album, to which she told us, thats no problem, we don't need to talk about that stuff now, we'll do all that later when you are decided on your photo's.

she has the gift of the gab and is wonderful at side tracking, which is what she did with us, and we didn't push the matter of how much a digital album would be we just signed the contract and off we went. actually we walked out the door and there was another couple waiting to go in, mark absolutely loved her and felt so confident in her, that he wanted to go back right then and put the deposit down. i said we should go home and digest it all, but he said what if that couple want our date and we loose it. So we went straight back and put the deposit down, without going home and being rationale about it all, and really digesting what she had said. Hard lesson learned.

we've gone with a 28 sided album, originally 20 sides, with mainly digitally enhanced pictures, and some normal piccies in there as well. We also upgraded the size of our album, to a larger size. We've got flip pages in there as well, so this is where the cost has come into it.
