Ok ladies,

Please help me. I was using Moby Disc until I read all these posts - Not Now!

Can anyone recommend a DJ for the Brisbane (Morningide) area ASAP?

We're going through Jag Entertainment (they advertise through I-Do, so its safe for me to say it. I actually found them not through I-Do though. They have heaps of bands etc on their books and they sent me a free sample cd with songs from each band.

If you're feeling stressed check them out. Everytime I send them and email and they respond extremely quickly. They're listed as Melbourne Wedding Entertaiment on the I-Do site.

I spoke to our venue and it is a very reputable restaurant in Sydney who have had functions using M*byd&sc ALL the time, and said they are always reliable and professional and have never had any negative feedback on them. I was a bit put off by the post but after speaking to a few people, I am not that concerned anymore.

As a former pub manager for almost 10 years I got to see a lot of mobile disco companies perform at functions in the venues I managed. The one thing that is a fact, and for which I therefore cannot be accused of libelling anyone is that if you go thru your local Yellow Pages and ring several of the larger ads in the "Disc Jockeys" section and get verbal quotes from them, you will usually find that m0byd1sc are the cheapest. You can draw your own conclusions from that. From my own observation, their equipment set-up is probably the smallest of any of the major companies we had thru the various pubs I managed, and has virtually no lighting.

Also their DJs weren't really DJs, if that makes any sense. They just put songs on at random from their list, and I did learn from one of their DJs that the company actually supplies all the DJs with the same library of CDs - they don't have to own their own music collection like DJs working for other companies do. Oh, and the CD players in their console were simply two little walkmans like you would take out jogging. Also I will tell you what I used to tell customers planning functions with us, and I gave them my advice simply because I wanted them to have a great time, so that they would afterwards always talk about having had a "great time" in my pub. Go to DJ company web-sites - look at photos they have of their equipment and photos taken at functions - ring them up & get their brochures or pamphlets or whatever and then make some careful comparisons.

If you do your homework properly you will soon suss out the companies who cut corners. I mean there are only four things you need to find out about:

1. Their DJs - where do they get them from, how experienced are they etc
2. Their music info -do they send out charts & lists for you to choose what gets played, how many pages of lists do they provide (the more the the better I guess) and do their collections span all musical eras
3. Is all their sound equipment "proper" disco gear - that might sound silly, but lots of companies only use "home stereo" type sound equipment instead of the good stuff
4. Lighting - some people underestimate the effect it can have, but from my observation the companies with some decent disco lighting got more people up dancing than the ones who brought so little lighting that we couldn't even dim down our normal room lights. With those companies we really had no choice but to leave our normal room lights turned on - which really does seem to inhibit people from dancing - but we couldn't have them tripping over the furniture or each other smile.gif

So my advice - put in some time on studying up on different disco companies until you are sure you are getting quality in those four areas I mentioned. Don't accept any "near enough is good enough" approach.

IF you go to vickichiki's post four posts above mine you will see that vicky & her husband put up their own web-site about their wedding. Click on their "photos" section, then follow that to the "reception" section & you will see the m0byd1sc set-up reasonably clearly in a few of the photos. If you click on the photos they will enlarge. You can see that the speakers aren't even knee high and the only lighting is six bare coloured spotlights in a rectangular box. Not a lot of "wow factor" there compared with a lot of disco systems I have seen.

Thank you Garry...I always feel awkward saying things like that as I am an owner of a DJ company, but I'm glad someone other than another DJ can appreciate the difference between a professional company and a company that will let someone from the general public with little or no music and entertainment experience be in charge of someones important occasion.
One thing to remember girls....the 2 things your guests will remember the most about your wedding reception are the food and the entertainment...make sure they are remembered for all the right reasons.

We had our wedding last Saturday (OMG a week already!!!) in Brisbane and we used Moby Disk. THe DJ we had was great. He was an older gentleman but he really did a great job. He was Mc and if he thought to change music to Disco to get the "oldies" up to dance, so he came up to me and checked that it was ok, same with special requests he put the last 30 minutes( after we had said bye and were packing up our things) for those. I could not have been happier with the job he did. When we did the goodbye circle, he got everyone(even the nanna's and grampa's) in a circle doing can can kicks to New York New York! It was a classic. But like it has been said that each Dj is different in the company but our DJ was great.

And let's remember... this is music for a wedding not for a dance party of 5000 people at the Hordern Pavilion so the technical issues probably aren't as imperative.

Well Mrs Matt, as far as "technical details not being as imperative", surely ALL details are of great importance in "getting it right". Just ONE area that lacks can ruin the overall "feel" of any wedding reception. I don't know how many Wedding Receptions you have been to, but we hosted at least 150 or so weddings at my two hotels over the past 10 years. Please don't be offended by this, but I'm sure that would be at least 10 to 15 times the number of wedding receptions you have ever been to as a guest. So hopefully my words carry a little more weight than yours purely and solely because of that fact - that I have seen so many functions - so please accept that organising the music is NOT something to be dismissed so lightly - it really does have a big influence on the "feel" of the function.

Basically what you seem to be saying with your "it's not a dance party for 5,000 people" comment is that therefore "near enough is good enough" - that the music isn't really important. Well you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But please try to understand that all my statements are NOT my personal opinions - they are observations - they are based on FACT - events that I actually witnessed. Now as to the 5,000 people you mentioned - NOT ONE of our wedding receptions (nor any of the 600 to maybe 800 other functions we hosted) would have exceeded 180 guests, so you somehow comparing that to a "dance party of 5000 people" is not really a relevant comparison.

Anyway, what I can tell you, again based NOT AT ALL on my own personal opinion but solely on my having actually seen it all hundreds of times, is that that there are FOUR very important differences between the packages provided by various different disco companies: - the experience & music knowledge of the DJ, and the size of his music collection, the size and scope of the music lists you are given to choose from, the quality of the actual sound equipment and the amount of lighting and it's ability to generate an atmosphere - it is a FACT (not an opinion) that a lack of decent lighting DOES inhibit many people from getting up to dance.

That is why I advise every bride (& her fiance) to treat the entertainment factor in their wedding reception as something to spend time on - not to rush into simply because it is one of the lowest expenses for the day. GET AS MANY DETAILS AS YOU CAN - & then evaluate the results with great care and deliberation. I wished that I could say it was solely our food, our decor & our good service that made every function in our hotels a success, but that wouldn't be telling you the truth. We have seen too many functions severely affected by poor entertainment - both live entertainers and DJs - it just takes the edge off everything if the entertainment is poor quality. There is just no real atmosphere then - there is no "buzz" - people's spirits are not lifted if you get what I mean. The function is just "flat". The music - that is, how good it is and how well it is packaged and presented, is truly the BIGGEST contributing factor as to whether a reception is judged to have been a success or not.

i agree it is very rude. excuse me know it all (sorry i mean garry) i dont think you have a right to criticise (sp?) vickichiki's choice of DJ and say it had no WOW factor.

Once again ladies, I repeat what I have said before - nobody has to take my advice. Take it or leave it - but there is no rudeness in what I have said - just, cold, hard facts. There is an old saying that goes "the truth so often offends".

I came here 4 or 5 weeks ago when my neice asked me to find her some good bridal web-sites to have a look at, and I have popped back every week or so since, not for my own selfish reasons, but because I saw an area where I could hopefully be of some assistance because of my experience. Again I repeat myself - my advice is not based on my own personal opinions - it is based on my actually being present at a VERY LARGE number of wedding receptions (far, far more than the average person would ever get to see) and observing what goes on - what works & what doesn't. I have seen it all take place many, many times. Whether that makes my advice of any value or not is up to you guys.

Maybe I'm wrong - maybe the entertainment is not important at all, and you shouldn't bother to spend any time on it or go into any details - just get it over & done with as quickly as possible - grab the cheapest you can find - which in every capital city in Australia (plus Canberra & the Gold Coast) just happens to be a large franchised company called m0byd!sc. That is not an opinion - it is fact that you can check for yourselves with a few quick phone calls.

And teresa2182, to be fair to me, you did take my comment about "wow factor" out of context - my full statement was that there was not a lot of wow factor "compared to other disco systems I have seen" - and having seen hundreds of functions with DJs & disco systems supplied by many other companies I stand by that comment. The simple truth is that m0byd!sc's system IS the smallest, the most minimal and has the least amount of lighting provided by ANY disco company that ever performed at our hotels, plus all their DJs I saw (and there were quite a few) were very amateurish and awkward - they were "hobby" DJs - and I feel that people should know that. But then to be fair to m0byd!sc, their prices are the lowest, so naturally people should not expect them to be the best - that's only common-sense.

And by the way teresa, I wan't criticising vickichiki's choice - she has the right to make any choice she likes - what I am criticising is the fact that certain disco companies cut as many corners as they can, and that is not really fair to people. But unfortunately there is no government regulation on the disco business, so they can do that. I believe it is perhaps something goverments should look into - and not only setting a minimum standard for the actual disco equipment but also perhaps all DJs should undergo some sort of government approved training course before they are turned loose on the poor old unsuspecting public. But until that happens, all that people can do is check details thoroughly before booking anyone. And always remember, "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys".

We had Moby Disc at our wedding in January and they were fantastic, and we did have the wow factor. He played every song requested and even allowed our cd's to be used if he didn't have that song. He was very professional and was a great help to my nervous MC and made the whole night run very smoothly.

Some people have good expereinces and some people don't, some people love them and others don't... If you choose not to have them that is totally up to you hon, this is your wedding day and being a recent bride I can totally understand that you want everything perfect. I did see the post about Moby Disc before my wedding and spoke to my reception place (it was part of their package) and they had never received a complaint about this company...

As the other have suggested look in your local yellow pages or if you have seen a DJ that you like at a local pub/club ask which company they work for and if they do private gigs... Hope this helps... tongue.gif
