This pregnancy was a little bit more bumpy than my first pregnancy with DD. I had a high risk scan at 12 weeks, which left me terrified and stressed for another 6 weeks or so. I had one of those fancy and expensive blood tests done and we finally found out that the baby was fine, and that we were expecting a baby boy.

I always measure ahead, as I did with DD, and was eventually diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Poo. So changed the diet, got a lot of support from friends who had also experienced GD and kept plodding along. Sore hips, unstable pelvis, and general uncomfortable-ness were experienced but nothing too horrible.

By 36 weeks I was so ready to pop. I was so heavy, every time I stood up I thought my pelvis would split or a baby would fall out! I didn't quite feel ready to give birth yet, and still hadn't packed my hospy bag yet. I had given birth to DD at 36 weeks, so anything could happen...

At my 38 week obs appointment, my glucose levels were a little erratic, and my blood pressure was a little higher than normal. So the obs decided to do a S&S to try to get things moving. He said I was already 2-3cms dilated, and that the baby's head was low. He said that there was a chance I could go into labour that night or the next morning. He further said he believed there was a 90% chance that I would have the baby within a week!

So I went home that evening and played with DD in the backyard in case this was one of the last opportunities to play with her. We had a lovely time while DH was cooking dinner in the kitchen.

I ate dinner with DD while DH was in his man cave working out. At 7pm I started to feel the odd vague period type pain in my belly. Was this it? Dunno.

I started timing them and they were about 10 mins apart. I asked my dec mums group what on the difference was between Braxton hicks and actual contractions as I didn't know! The pain became closer together, maybe 5 mins apart, but still quite mild. I popped downstairs to let DH know that I was having a bit of pain.

I let my parents know and they came to pick DD up at about 8pm. She was thrilled to see mum but when she got in the car to leave she started to cry - I think she was confused sad.gif

Pain got worse and when I spoke to the maternity ward they asked me to come in. By this time I had to breathe through the contractions and I kept saying 'ooowwwwwww...' It was just after 9pm.

The drive was only 15 mins but I remember muttering '*^%$!ng hurry up...'

Got to the mat ward where my midwife was waiting for me. I had already told her on the phone that I would like an epidural, as I knew the pain would only get worse. Upon examination, she told me I was already 7-8cm dilated!!! She called my obs straight away and he was on his way.

The contractions were getting worse and I kept begging for pain relief. I wasn't allowed to have anything good until the obs arrived (I did have gas though). It was honestly horrible. Contractions every 2 mins or so, so painful I wanted to cry and give up. I almost fell asleep between each contraction, I was that tired.

By the time the obs arrived (maybe 10pm?) he declared I was 9-10cms and it was too late for pain relief! By this stage I was having gas, but other than making me feel a little high, it didn't do anything.

I was told to start pushing when I felt like it and I kept saying 'I can't I can't!' And begging for pain relief. When I pushed, I screamed like a banshee. Seriously it was like the movies!! The screaming (and I was full on screaming) came involuntarily but seemed to help me with pushing. I pushed with every contraction, however by this stage my body was also sometimes pushing on its own without contractions as well - I couldn't stop it.

So on one of those involuntary pushes I felt a gush and the baby's head popped out! Next involuntary push, his body came out! I kept asking 'what happened?' And then he was lifted and put onto my chest smile.gif

Then all the boring stuff happened like delivering the placenta and being stitched up. I felt almost everything as locals don't work too well on me and I had maxed out what I was allowed to have but could still feel the stitches sad.gif. I also bled a fair bit so the obs has to put pressure on my abdomen to ensure nothing was retained.

So A dam was born on 17/12/2013 at 10:37pm. He weighs 3380gms, his head circumference is 33cms, length 53cm.

DH and I adore our little baby and keep staring at him in wonder. DD gives him snuggles and not so gentle pats smile.gif. I'm loving this quiet time in hospy as we're getting to know each other smile.gif

If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading xx

Congratulations AnA! Mammoth effort in surviving it without the epidural!
DD1 and DD2 are the same age difference as your little ones so I can just imagine what the 'not so gentle pats' are like x

Well done

I had laugh reading this. I'm sure at the time it would have seemed like the longest time. DH and I don't live far from the hospital but I'm sure I will be exactly the same.
