Starting to think about names
Posted 11 November 2013 - 09:26 PM
I like classic names, nothing too popular but I don't want anything too unusual - I don't want her to be one of 5 with the same name in her class but I don't want her to have to spell her name every single time. DH is fairly conservative, but I'm hoping that a balance of classic but uncommon will win him over
Middle name will be Christine in honour of my late MIL, surname starts with A.
So, my list, some more favourite than others but all of which I like

I don't think Ebony has the same classic feel as the others though.
Did you want to be able to shorten the name? You have a couple there that doesn't really work with - Heather especially, though I had a friend named Heather whose parents called her Blossom/Bloss as a nickname instead.
The names that end in an 'a' sound might not work as well with your last name.

Until then I will continue to torch all correspondence that bores me and to dance naked over the remnants of its still glowing embers. ~ Edward Monkton

I really like Zara. A name that wound suit both a baby and a lady

I took off the ones I don't like as much. I don't dislike any from your list though! They are all lovely, the above are just my favourites (in no particular order).

A lot of these names were among the top 100 last year, so definitely on the popular side.
Annalise - Gorgeous. NN potential is good.
Ebony - Lovely. Not much nn potential.
Esther - a bit too old lady for me. I'd prefer Elsie or Edith
Freya - LOVE this name. Not sure it works well with Christine.
Felicity - Another great name! Love the nn Flick.
Genevieve - Might be a bit long with the mn Christine. Lots of nn potential though.
Heather - Too 80's. Especially with Christine.
Hannah - I'm not a fan and I also think this screams 80's when coupled with Christine. Also within top 20 names for TAS last year.
Imogen - Lovely. Doesn't flow as well with Christine. Love the nn Immy.
Isla - Lovely but creeping up in popularity at a rather quick rate. Sounds gorgeous with Christine.
Ivy - Also within top 50. Great name though. I really like Ivy.
Penelope - Less popular than the others. Not as spunky IMP but a good name that would suit a child and an adult.
Zara - Top 50 but nice.
Zoe - Lovely but getting more popular by the year. This was ranked #23 in TAS last year.

Ivy, Zara and Zoe also work well IMO.
My favourite name from your list is Hannah though <3

I like all your choices but agree with Chritine you need something light/shorter.

Annalise - Like it a lot but name will probably be shortened a lot by others.
Ebony - Love this one, this is actually my favourite from your list.
Esther - A bit old fashioned for my liking
Freya - Same, a bit old fashioned for my liking
Felicity - Not really a fan for some reason and really not even sure why?
Genevieve - Like it, haven't heard this name for a while either. Might be a bit long with middle name combo though
Heather - Don't mind it
Hannah - Like it
Imogen - Love it!
Isla - Love it!
Ivy - Love it!
Penelope - Nice name but not one I would use
Zara - It's ok, but I would probably go with Zoe over Zara for some reason
Zoe - Like it
From your list my favourites would probably be Ebony, very closely followed by any of the "I" names you have... They are all so nice I have a hard time picking between them!

My favourites from your list are Esther, Felicity, Genevieve and Penelope. Annalise, Hannah, Imogen, Isla Zara and Zoe are a bit common for my taste. Heather, Freya, Ebony and Ivy have negative associations for me.
Some suggestions that you might like and may be winners with your husband (from my never to be used girl's list): Cecelia/Celia/Cecily, Elspeth/Elsa/Elsie and Frances.

Annalise - like
Ebony - don't like
Esther - don't like
Freya - like
Felicity - so-so
Genevieve - like
Heather - don't like
Hannah - don't like
Imogen - like
Isla - like
Ivy - like
Penelope - like (but not Penny)
Zara - like
Zoe - so-so
You've chosen some great names! It's so difficult, isn't it?!
Posted 12 November 2013 - 07:09 PM
1) Isla & Zara
2) Zoe, Ivy, Genevieve & Penelope
3) Freya & Annalise
4) Felicity & Imogen
6) Esther, Hannah & Penelope
Interesting a few people have suggested Elsie, it's my Nan's name and I love it but DH vetoed it long ago. He felt it was too unusual... That gives you an idea of what I'm dealing with
This is really helpful - please keep it coming

Annalise- Love but not sure I would use with Christine, would only consider if surname was two syllables or less.
Ebony- Love funnily even though this has the same amount of syllables it sounds shorter in my head.
Esther- Love especially with Christine
Genevieve- LOVE, I would use this if we ever have a girl but I don't want the nickname Jenny.
Heather- It's nice but not quite my style
Hannah- Love this, timeless, pretty, makes me think of an intelligent beautiful girl.
Imogen- Love this name but it was 1 on nameberry so far this year.
Isla- this was on our girl list for years but my cousin named his daughter Isla
Penelope- I think precocious when I hear this name sorry.
I also had an Elsie vetoing husband too, its such a pretty name.
I went through my name list app on my phone as you had heaps the same as me so just listed those you hadn't.
