We're tossing up two names at the moment - James (with middle Matthew Russell as family names) or Jason (with Neil Charles as middle, again family names - Neil Russell being my side and Matthew Charles DH's side). I literally woke up one morning saying he's a James (and this was before we'd even been told it was a boy). Problem is we both hate Jamie and Jimmy as shortenings (due to personal experiences).
Jason we both like but I still can't get my head around it - I keep thinking he's a James. Our other choice was Joshua/Josh but bub's cousin (admittedly a couple of years older) has taken that.

Any thoughts on selling DH on James and avoiding shortenings?

I've taught lots of boys called James and they have never been Jimmys or Jamies - I think that tends to be an older generation thing? I'm a shocker for shortening people's names but I always call anyone named James, James. Every Jason I know I've heard called Jase though!

I was going to say the same thing as Gretch about thinking its a older generation thing.

My DH is a James I call him James most of the time but Jim when I am typing because I am lazy. I never got where the Jim came from. His family mostly call him Buck which has nothing to do with James at all. I think you can mostly direct nicknames to your liking.

My stepbrother is a James. It has never been shortened (or lengthened).
I think it would involve the person or parents determining to use Jim or Jamie as an alternative for it to catch on.

I don't think James needs to be shortened.

Hubby's best friend is James and that's what we have always called him. I don't think anyone calls him Jim or Jimmy.

I haven't heard Jimmy or Jamie for ages actually.

I think James is a lovely name. I'd go with it smile.gif

Thanks Ladies smile.gif

The issues with Jimmy and Jamie are both generation older people - so yep think I'll be pushing for this one. I don't mind Jase/Jason but I just can't shake the "he's a James" thing. blush.gif (crazy as that may sound)

James is 1 syllable, it doesn't need to be shortened. Jamie and Jimmy are actually longer! All the James' I know are just James. I went to school with a couple of James -> Jamies but I haven't heard it for awhile. A sister of a friend had a James who they call Jimmy recently but they started the nicknaming, it didn't happen automatically.

I generally avoid names I don't like the inevitable nicknames for but James is fairly safe. You can't rule out that your son would want to go by Jimmy or Jamie down the track but it's just as likely he'd want to go by some other random nickname derived from his surname or sporting prowess etc.

FWIW I prefer James over Jason. Jason is a nice enough name but it's starting to feel dated. I know a heap of Joshua's too so James gets my vote of the 3 (plus if you feel like he is a James already that's extra reason to use the name).

Mooze I totally understand your strong feeling about him being James. My DS name came to me so strongly when I was pregnant with him & it was almost like he was telling me his name. I'm so happy I went with it.
I agree that the little boy James I know is called James & no nickname. Like Tigridia said its a one syllable name so no need to shorten it.
All the best!

I adore the name James! The James' I know that are my age are definitely a James with no nick name (well not a nickname that relates to James). Whereas I know a James or two in my parents and grandparents generation who are referred to as Jim rather than James.

The thing is, in Australia we give people nicknames, whether they be from their first names, last names, a physical characteristic. You don't have to call him James, but other people might, and if you're OK with that then go for the name.

I love the name James and would never shorten it to Jim or Jimmy.

My son's name is Patrick and I really dislike the nickname Pat. It almost stopped me calling him that. We call him Paddy all the time as well as Patrick but Pat I just don't like.

I'm sure as he gets older his name will get shortened to Pat and there is nothing I can do about it but I'll try darn hard to make sure.

I really love the name James, in fact it was on our short list for our boys as well.

Just be very strong with other people about his name being James, not Jamie or Jim. I know someone whose IL's decided that her sons name needed shortening, and so just starting calling him by the short version, she hates it but left it too long before saying anything as the IL's can be quite hard to stop on things like that.

I love the name James.

DH's adult nephew is James and it's rarely shortened however we know 4 other boys (8 and under) named James and there are 3 Jamies and 1 Jimmy. None of them are every called James but that was the parents' preference from when they were born.

I think you can definitely state a preference but just be aware that you cannot completely control what the nn will be. I say this as someone whose parents hate the nn Mel. I was never called Mel until I left home, but then at Uni someone decided Melissa had far too many syllables. And now I am Mel to everyone except my family tongue.gif

Totally agree with all of the above... I also love the name James and wouldn't shorten it. Of the James I have met not one of them has had a nickname of Jim, Jamie or Jimmy.

Agree that it is an older generation thing too and to me its up there with giving a John the nickname of Jack- never really got that one either! Bother names are one syllable and don't require a separate nickname blink.gif

Its a lovely name, I say go with it smile.gif

For this name I would say go for it. DH loved Domenic for a boys name and I quite liked it but couldn't stand Dom. There is no way a Domenic wouldn't get Dom but likely a James wouldn't get Jamie or Jim
