I'd say it eye-ree based on other Japanese names I know. I think a lot of people would say air-ree though.

I agree, knowing its Japanese would alter my pronunciation based on my limited knowledge of Japanese. But, to the average punter, I think Air-ree would be the assumption.

My guess would be air-ree, but I would pronounce it however the mum told me it was pronounced. Either way, I like it - it's cute. wink.gif

A-ii-rri
3 syllables.

So quickly I would say 'Ayiri', rolling the r.

Having studied Japaneses my pronunciation is the same as what lil bloom said, but I think most people would pronounce it air-ree.

With a bit of Japanese knowledge I'd go with the same as lil bloom.

However I think most people in Australia would think Airy!

It's a lovely name whichever way you say it.

I'd say eye-ree. Knowing it was Japanese didn't change how I want to pronounce it.

Did Japanese at school so eye-ree. I think I would still say it that way anyway as in Aileen.

Thanks ladies I am glad to hear that's how you would pronounce it. We thought it looked pretty and it would sound pretty but then went to some pronunciation thing (googled) and it said
I-de
which put us right off. It's only for a middle name we are looking so slight pronunciation differences are ok but that threw us. Lol. We are still trying to find the perfect name but I think Airi might go back on the list as an option. It's a nice match to our daughter's middle name Hana which is Japanese and Persian meaning flower and Airi has a flower connection too.
