My Birth Story - six months late!

After having a Ceasaran with J, we knew that it would be quite likely that I would need another one. So decided to go private this time. After meetings with our Obs, we talked about natural vs c-sec again and decided to go for a c-sec. Then we would also be able to plan Nanna (who lives in the UK) being here for the arrival. We were given a date at this appointment and it felt weird knowing that this (all going to plan) would be our baby’s birthday.

The pregnancy was up and down. I had morning sickness this time, or afternoon sickness really. I would feel like I was coming down with the flu, go off food every afternoon and evening. Thankfully this only lasted from 6 – 11 weeks.

Week 12 - had a really bad cold, which hung around for about six weeks and then that turned into viral induced asthma and was super wheezy for another six or so weeks and was on ABs and asthma meds for what felt like forever.

Week 27 – DH and I had food poisoning. Which was totally horrid whilst pregnant. I thought I was dying!

Weeks 35 + serious ligament/nerve pain in my pelvis that would render me unable to move for the remainder of pregnancy – fun with a two year old. This involved a trip to the hospital one night for monitoring – but realised in the car that every bump was making it worse so realised that they weren’t contractions. Probably didn’t help that bubs was super active! I counted movements once for one hour and stopped when I got to 70.

I really was convinced that I would not make it to 39 weeks. However it seemed like our little man was pretty comfy in there.

T-minus five days – my mum arrives from the UK and she finally got to see me with a huge pregnant bump and got to feel lots of kicks!

D day – or C day arrived we were booked in for an afternoon timeslot. So got to spend the morning with our special little man, knowing that his life from today onwards was going to change forever. I cried when I left him and got in the car to go to hospital.

We were checked into our room and were told that our timeslot had been put back – so spent those hours trying to relax and getting impatient.

Finally we went down to theatre. I was pretty relaxed as I knew I was in good hands. I couldn't believe how slow the whole thing was. After having the emergency c-sec last time, I was in and opened up straight away. This time the Doctors were talking and laughing and I was getting even more impatient!

After what felt like forever, we were ready to go, and again sat with my DH wondering whether Boy or Girl and what they would look like.

The nurse mentioned bubs had lots of hair, then a few minutes later we hear that wonderful sound of bubs crying. The screen lowered and being told it was a boy! Which was a little shock as everyone was convinced it was a girl. He looked so tiny and so different to J.

DH goes over with bubs and gets to cut the cord, even though he said he didn’t want to.

Most annoying part of the whole thing, was one of the theatre nurses asking “if would be going back for a third child, to try for girl?” Seriously this question annoys me at the best of times. My son wasn't even five minutes old!

After he was cleaned up he was placed on my chest and I got a few snuggles before he was taken up to the ward and I got closed up and taken to recovery.

I hated being in recovery. Hated it – I just wanted to get to see my baby. This hospital policy is stupid and needs to be changed.

Finally I am taken back to my room, which was empty. Though thankfully only for a few minutes before bubs is brought to me. Unfortunately because of all the delays, my parents and J had already arrived and had met A whilst I was in recovery, so I got to miss J meeting his brother for the first time. Although at the time he wasn’t really fussed. The McDonalds and Buzz lightyear that A had brought him as a gift, was by far more interesting that his new brother.

A would not attached at all. So after seven hours of trying and lots of crying later we give him a little formula, after which he falls asleep for eight hours.

We have a great first night, I get some sleep and all is good. A still will not attach and in his first few weeks of life only attaches only a handful of times. Every time I try he would get more and more frustrated. So I make the decision to express full time and give it via a bottle. This I did for five and half months. It was quite full on but would feed him and express at the same time to save time.

It was instant love and as soon as he arrived I felt a huge amount of contentment, which I still have. My family is complete.

Although J was not fussed with his brother at all to start with, six months into their relationship, J just loves him now. Always pats him on the head, puts his dummy back in if it falls out, takes toys to him etc. I just love watching them together, it is just devine.

Thanks for sharing.

It's amazing how different the atmosphere is in an elective c-sec vs emergency. It sounds like it was pretty calm.

Congratulations.
