The long awaited arrival of Olivia and Liam
Posted 20 December 2012 - 07:59 PM
For those who didnt know, I have 3 children from a previous relationship. After that relationship ended and I was on my own with 3 kids I had resigned myself to only having 3 children, and being quite happy and comfortable with my decision! Three under the age of 4 on my own was a challenge somedays!!
Time went on and I met my DH. Very early on in the relationship the topic of children came up. He had no biological children and he was joining an instant family! He loves my kids like his own but he was also keen to have his own bio kids. My youngest was 3 at this stage and the thought of going back to the newborn stage with nappies and crying etc wasnt entirely enticing to me but it wasnt a deal breaker, I was prepared to give it a go, after he was fully briefed on just how poorly I did with pregnancies!
My three previous pregnancies have all been difficult. I have had severe hyperemesis gravidarum with all three, requiring multiple hospital stays, many kilos being lost, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, gestational hypertension and the list goes on!! I tried to warn him just how sick I would be, told him I would need heaps of support and help, might not be able to work etc etc and he was still keen to give it a go! My sister was pregnant at the time we were thinking of TTC and I told him that he was getting a glimpse of what was coming!
TTC wasnt difficult, we fell pregnant the first month of trying, however that ended in an ectopic pregnancy and resulted in emergency surgery and the removal of my fallopian tube. Sadly this was my second ectopic and now I had no fallopian tubes left as the other one had been removed previously. This all happened on the 2nd of January and our New Year celebrations were ruined. I was suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to hold my own baby again and I grieved the loss of the baby that never made it.
I was keen to move forward and asked my OB what my options were now that I had no tubes. He referred me to a Fertility Specialist (who is actually his wife) and we went off for our appointment. We were given promising stats: I had carried 3 pregnancies before, had healthy eggs, had no issues getting pregnant, just needed them to be in the right spot!!
We moved forward with our first round of IVF and things were going well. On the advice of the FS we had 2 embryos transferred back in (her EXACT words were, the chances of both taking are less than 10%) and sat back to wait for the longest 2 weeks of our lives! Towards the end of the fortnight I developed full blown Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome and spent the next 7 days in hospital with pleural effusions, 12L of abdominal ascites and uncontrollable vomiting. I remember telling hubby that if the cycle hadnt worked there was no way I was going back to try again!!
Whilst in hospital with my OHSS the OB came to admit me, and then told me mid consult he had to leave as my sister was in labour at the same time!! Later that night he came back to tell me that my blood tests indicated that I was indeed pregnant! In between vomiting everything I had in my stomach and then some I remember feeling very happy and relieved.
We had our first OB appointment at 6 weeks and we went along with my head in a bucket. I had no inkling that anything was unusual to me this was how all my pregnancies went! He did a bedside ultrasound and said I think I can see one baby but go down the road to the high tech scan place and let them have a look. Down the road I stumbled, complete with vomit bucket, and after collapsing onto the scan table, were were told there was in fact TWO babies in utero!!! I was too exhausted to say much except she said they wouldnt both take! hahaha
We had some bleeding at 8 weeks and we were worried that something was wrong but multiple scans showed 2 happy growing babies and no indication for the bleeding. Between weeks 9-15 I had 3 hospital admissions for vomiting and lost about 12 kgs. Hubby was totally not prepared for just how sick I would be. Showering, cleaning my teeth, dressing myself, all totally unable to do without help, even trying to prepare him had been useless!! I was struggling to go to work and was having issues with my boss finding modified duties for me (OB wanted me doing no lifting or transferring of patients I work in Emergency) and the whole saga was raising my stress levels until the OB rang my boss and pulled the pin saying I wouldnt be back to work until after the babies were born. This made it somewhat easier physically to cope and I spent many days sleeping away the hours in between vomiting. Hubby had to really step up to the plate and look after everything, and my parents and sister had to help and we wouldnt have made it without them!
At 31 weeks the twinnies decided that they had been in utero long enough and decided to make an attempt at exit. Off to the hospital again we went only to be told I was dilating and having contractions!! I had initially gone down as I had a bad headache and my tummy was super tight! There commenced the bedrest which would continue until the twins were born. I was given all the steroid injections and nifedipine to stop the contractions, I was allowed out of bed for toilet priveliges only and could only have a 5 minute shower the nurses used to time me and I would feel the contractions ramp up if I stood up for too long! At this stage Twin A was head down and we were planning a vaginal birth and I remember them doing an internal and saying they could feel her head!
After a week in hospital I was allowed home and continued my bed rest til 36 weeks. I was allowed to go to the OBs rooms and that was it. I started to go stir crazy! The OB was telling me to eat up as the twins needed to put weight on so basically I was sitting around stuffing my face all day!
Gestational diabetes was finally behaving itself on 4 times daily insulin injections but the BP continued to be an issue. It was fluctuating and I had to have daily monitoring at home, and third daily at the hospital. The OB threatened to take them at 34 weeks if my BP didnt co-operate. I started to try and prepare myself and hubby for a prem arrival turns out we didnt need it!! My OB then decided to take himself off on holidays for a week and I was too scared to move too far from the lounge or bed in case I went into labour while he was away!!
My final OB appointment at 36+5 showed massive protein in my urine, I had spotty vision and my BP was climbing. I was told to go home and get my bags and get back to the hospital as the babies were being born the following morning. He also said my vaginal birth was out as he didnt want me to labour and have my BP go up again and the babies were still playing acrobats and changing position.
The 30th November rolled around and I was surprised I had managed a good sleep in delivery suite the night before. Hubby had gone home to sleep but was a complete nervous wreck about the thought of me having an operation (he is terrible with any kind of injury, pain or blood) and so we had my sister there as a support person for HIM!! She was to be there to help him and support him when he came back up from theatre and into SCN with the twins, and to also capture those first few moments of their lives on camera for me.
Down to theatre we went were hubby proceeded to hyperventilate in the holding bay he was pale and sweaty and the nurses were more worried about him than me!! I was taken in to get my spinal and get prepped and then hubby came in. Literally 3 minutes after he came into theatre Twin A was born, our gorgeous Olivia, followed very quickly one minute later by our chubber Liam. They were gorgeous, yelling their lungs out and great sizes! I got to have a cuddle and a kiss and then they went upstairs with hubby. I remember asking the OB what time I could get back up stairs and he said he was happy for me to leave recovery at 10:15, I remember thinking ok thats half an hour from now!!
Sitting out in recovery I was cleared at 10:15 to go back upstairs, they tried to take me out but the doors wouldnt open! turns out there was a fire alarm and all the doors were closed!! I was stuck down in recovery with all the other patients until 12!! I must have asked a thousand times can I go up to my babies now?! Eventually we got upstairs and I asked them to take me straight to SCN which they did, and Olivia got handed to me straight away and went straight onto the breast where she stayed for a good 30 minutes! Apparently she had been yelling before I got there to be fed! Liam was brought over and I said hey buddy and he opened his eyes hubby said, Ive been talking to him for ages and he hasnt opened his eyes once!
They stayed 36 hours in the SCN for blood sugar monitoring and also for monitoring due to my pre-eclampsia but they came out to my room the next day and roomed in the whole time.
They are 3 weeks old tomorrow and so far we have no problems! They are both breastfeeding like champs, putting on heaps of weight and they sleep and settle brilliantly. They are the most adorable babies and their older siblings and cousins love them to pieces. We have been truly blessed with 2 gorgeous healthy happy content babies and I cannot imagine my life without them in it!

I hope you are resting up as much as you can. Your body has been through a lot but I bet it was worth it a million times over.
