Hi all,

I had an ultrasound this week and was told that I have a 5cm cyst on my overy. I have poly cystic overies and have had burst cysts in the past but I'm just wondering if anyone has had a cyst this size and what was done about it. Do you have surgery or monitor it? I'm really worried that I might lose the overy.

Thank you!

Melba, there are lots of things they can do with a cyst that size and I have friends who have had them successfully drained with key hole surgery it will all depend on what sort of cyst it is - your gyno will be the best to tell you what is the best course of action for your type of cyst. Worst case scenario is that the cyst will need to be removed and/or the ovary - I had an 8cm endometriotic cyst and after two surgeries the entire ovary needed to be removed. I still had one perfectly healthy ovary (but some other issues with endometriosis that my gyno thought would make it unlikely for me to have children) - the remaining ovary compensates for the missing one - as it turns out my other issues didn't pose a problem and I have two beautiful girls off that one ovary.

Thanks crose smile.gif I will be speaking to my FS (IVF) tomorrow. I just hate worrying all weekend! Why do these things always happen just before a weekend. Thank you for sharing what happened to you and your friends. How fantastic that you have two beautiful girls smile.gif I am already fertily challenged so the loss of an overy would not be great as we would love another child but I am also very lucky to have a gorgeous 3 year old boy so I guess we will just have to see what happens. Thanks again.

I had a 10cm cyst that we waited for 2 months to see if it would reduce in size.

I worried a lot too and was in pain fair bit.

It didn't so I had it removed when it torted (which is so damn painful!). They ended up removing my ovary but tested the fertility of my other ovary - the difference of overall fertility despite the missing ovary was 2%.

I now have a 4 month old baby.

I had a tumour removed from my left ovary when I was 21 - I was the size of golf ball. I lost about half of my ovary during an op. I have poly cystic ovaries and have had burst cysts since the removal of my tumour.

I have three beautiful babies wub.gif

So even though I had to have an op and it was all a bit full on, it turned out fine in the end wink.gif

I had endometriosis and had stabbing pain one day. U/S revealed a 6cm blood filled cycst. They said wait and see. A few months later I collasped at work in pain and was taken to hospital, cyst was then 10cm and twisting on my ovary. Was removed next day. I kept my ovary smile.gif
