Hi everyone.

I currently have 6.5L of EBM in my chest freezer. I BF for 3 months and expressed during that time. We discovered after this time bubs can't tolerate the gluten coming through my milk. I have kept the milk "just in case" he changes, but it isn't happending. Is a milk bank the only option? I would hate to bin it, l worked so bloody hard for it. But my bubs hates it...but l know a bubs out there would appreciate it. It was expressed during 1/11/2011 - 15/1/2012 so l know l only have 12 months max for this milk to be used.

What a lovely thing to do. I'm not sure about specific places, but could you contact your local hospital and see if they'll take it for premmie babies? Otherwise, I know face book has groups HM4HB (human milk 4 human babies) that might have a group in your area.

I think most official places like hospitals can't take it without lots of checks and clearances - they've actually started up a milk bank at the Mercy hospital here in Melbourne but it's only open for those who gave birth at the Mercy, and you have to express into special packaging etc.

I gave a heap of my frozen milk away through the FB group that Carolyn mentioned ^^ There are a number of people who for whatever reason want to keep topping up with human milk rather than formula, and there are often people who will volunteer to drive it around the city if they're going that way. I think I posted in response to a request and someone turned up the next day to pick it all up!

It's precious stuff and given the effort it takes to express it all, I like the idea of someone making use of it rather than throwing it all down the sink.

Just thought id third the HM4HB Facebook page. I had a super low supply in the early days and i joined the FB group just in case. I never used any donated milk, but its such an awesome concept.

I really hope milk-sharing becomes a lot more mainstream.

I'm so happy you posted this! I have 20 x 200ml packets in the deep freezer just taking up space. My little poss will only take her milk fresh from the source so it was just sitting there. Because I had delayed lactation and had to work so hard, I think I would cry if I threw it away! I looked up the Facebook group and made a post so hopefully someone will want it.
