After 5 weeks of tightenings, and wondering when my body was going to get it's act together, Miles Joseph arrived at 5:10pm on Sunday 15th July.

It had been an eventful week. My first Obs appointment on the Monday saw me sent to hospital for a CTG. He was concerned about the baby's heartbeat and movements. An hour or so later, the midwives could see no reason for concern, so sent me home.
On Tuesday I rang the Maternity Ward (I can't even remember why now, but I was beyond frustrated at this point, I was uncomfortable and desperate to meet my boy!) and among other things, was told the Obs had called that morning re my CTG and wanted me to go back on the Thursday for another. Lucky I rang, as I didn't hear from the Obs.
Thursday morning I rang to ask for an ideal time to go up for the CTG, then off we went. Onto the CTG again, monitored for over an hour, and midwives weren't overly happy with the baseline so spoke to the on-duty Obs and decided I should come back that afternoon. So we came home (so Penny could have a nap, the poor girl was schlepped around as I wasn't going to drive into hospital by myself, and dad played chauffeur) then headed back in for a repeat performance. This stint of CTG monitoring went for about 2 hours. An hour of which I spent laying on my side. Torture.
By the end, the midwives took a look at the readout and said "You've got a happy baby in there who is moving a lot, I have no idea why they wanted you to have this done". They offered me an internal and stretch and sweep (my second, I had had one the Monday of the week before) and I accepted.

That night, I had more tightenings that got quite close together, and rang the Maternity Ward. The midwife who had done the S & S answered and said she didn't want to tell me to not come in, but it sounded more like my body was just reacting to the S & S, rather than actual contractions. Sure enough, not long after I got off the phone they disappeared. Sigh.

Friday came and I was still getting irregular tightenings. By this stage, I was overdue so I knew that further dealings had to be with the Obs. Midwives aren't allowed to make any decisions past due dates. I rang the Obs to book an appointment so that he could tell me what was going on with the CTGs and to decide on an eviction plan.
It was 3pm when I called and apparently he was 'just about to call me' (Ha!) and an appointment was made for 4:30pm that afternoon.

In we went. He had a feel of my belly, said bub was still quite high, but that's nothing to be concerned about with a second pregnancy, and asked if I'd had any discharge. By this stage I'd had about a week of discharge (I'm guessing plug-related) to the extent that I had to have a pad in or end up with icky knickers. He decided to do an internal, and concluded that my cervix was still long and firm and 'you have about a 1% chance of having a baby this weekend'. {I didn't comprehend it all properly at the time, and later remembered that the midwives had told me that after the first baby the cervix becomes softer and shorter anyway. I think the Obs has felt too many cervixes in his time .. he did my mum's 6 week checkup 28 years ago!}.

I left feeling a bit blah, but more relaxed than I had been. I didn't feel so 'on edge' that any niggle could be it. Saturday we did some errands in town, so I did a fair bit of walking, but again, was feeling pretty relaxed. I'd told a few friends what the Obs had said about the 1% chance and they all remained more hopeful than I did!
Saturday night I didn't get to sleep til about 10pm. I was then woken up at around 1am (I think?) by a contraction. I didn't get back to sleep til around 5am (?), then started timing contractions at about 7.30am. They were 10-15 minutes apart at this stage, and fairly strong. By about 10am, they'd gotten to about 10 minutes apart, and I had an utterly blissful shower during which I thought I'd try a bit of nipple stimulation because I was ready to try anything to hurry things along at this stage {jumping on the trampoline had even been suggested by friends on twitter, and if it wasn't going to be pretty much impossible to get on the thing, I probably would've been on there!}.
I wandered around the house, still timing contractions, texting friends with updates, and the contractions kept up the intensity, and got a bit closer together. At about 12:20, I called the hospital to let them know I'd been having contractions since the wee small hours of the morning, and they'd been no more than 10 minutes apart for the last 2.5 hours. It was go time.

I'd been in my room to make the phone call, and when I walked out, dad asked Penny if she wanted to go the park. I told him we couldn't go, we needed to go to the hospital, I was pretty sure This Was It. {we'd had a false alarm on Origin night, plus all the other trips to the hospital, we were all pretty over it!} He asked if he had time for a shower, I told him 'a quick one!' but he thought better of it, and we all piled into the car.
It's about a 30 minute drive to the hospital, and I had another 3 contractions in that time. Contractions in a car? Yeah, not fun!

Straight into a delivery room when I got to the hospital, and onto the CTG. Dad and Penny were allowed in with me, so dad did his best to entertain her while we waited. I was on the monitor for a while, but they wanted me on for a bit longer so they could see how bub was reacting to the contractions. After I'd had a couple, I buzzed the midwife back in so she could see. She told me they were 'fairly mild', then walked back out as they were getting ready for a shift change. When she left the room I said to dad 'Fairly mild? About as mild as someone stabbing you in the back with a blunt knife!'.
Shift change came, they did an internal (Dad and Penny had left to go for a play at this stage. There are certain things one doesn't need to share with her family!) and the midwife said I was 3cm dilated, and could've been stretched to 5. When I told her what the Obs had said her reaction was 'Well I don't know what cervix he was feeling, because your baby will be here today!'.
I stayed on the CTG, and the contractions got more and more intense. I probably stuffed up the reading because I HAD to sit up during contractions. Laying down was far too uncomfortable!
A bit after 4pm she did another internal, and I was about 6cm. As she took the CTG off, I felt my waters break. Apparently she was just about to tell me to get my skirt and undies off after the next contraction in case my waters broke. Oops.
I asked if I could have some pain relief, and she said she'd get the gas, so while she did that I went in to the bathroom to get changed and clean up a bit. The midwife started to get things ready for the birth, and dad and Penny came back at around this time too.
The contractions were pretty intense, and I knew it wouldn't be long. Dad asked what I wanted him and Penny to do and while I struggled through a contraction I told him I didn't want Penny to see me like this. I checked the clock (it was 4:20pm) and said it wasn't far off her dinner time so they might as well head home. After they left I got stuck into the gas and stomped and grunted my way through the next couple of contractions. I remember thinking that I was glad I was there on my own as I felt so raw and exposed.

When the midwife came back in, I asked if I could go in for a shower. She was happy for me to do that, so wheeled the gas in for me, and got the water going. She was still setting things up and was in and out of the room. I had the gas doovy clenched between my teeth, and was leaning over onto the edge of the bath so the water could be on the small of my back. It was the only way I could even begin to cope with the contractions.
I reached over and buzzed the midwife - who must've been just about to walk back in the door anyway - and told her it was going to be happening soon. The student midwife got herself ready, and they asked if I was happy to have the baby in the shower. There was no way in hell I was going to be moving anywhere, and sitting down on the bed wasn't going to happen, so I got myself into position facing the wall, kneeling on the floor, leaning over a chair. Classy wink.gif

I grunted and groaned and told them I need to get the baby out. At 4:50pm I started pushing, and at 5:10pm he was here. I had doubted myself, but I had done it.

I took one look at him, and every other name I'd been considering disappeared from my mind. Miles Joseph was in my arms.

We had an hour of skin to skin, and he tried to have a nuzzle at the boob, but mostly he just looked at me with his big bright eyes. I mentioned to the midwife that he seemed to alert already and she said that he pretty much opened his eyes before he took a breath. Bless.

He scored 9 on both of his Apgars, and weighed in at 3.39kg (I'd said that I was thinking he'd be about 1.5 Pennys and I wasn't far off! She was 2.032kg). He was a long-legged 52cm and (like his sister!) had a big head at 36cm. No wonder it hurt so much pushing him out! laugh.gif
No stitches required, and no surgery for a manual removal. Much different experience to having Penny!

We stayed in hospital til lunchtime on the Monday, then headed home. Our first night at home he let me have 5 hours sleep after a biiiiig feed.

Penny is completely besotted with him, and gets very upset if a stranger has 'her' baby. She's a little too enthusiastic at times, but means well. She's certainly slipped right into the big sister role, which is partly why I wanted to get home as soon as I could - her normality had been all over the shop over the weeks leading up, and she was going to be the one most impacted by the change without really knowing why it was happening so I wanted her to have things back to 'normal'. She and dad came up to the hospital the night Miles was born, and once they got home dad told her it was time to go to bed and she started looking for us. Then when they came to pick us up, dad only mentioned me and she piped up with 'Baby!'.

I am so completely in love with my little family.

Thanks for your comments ladies smile.gif

Penny has her moments (she'll want to cuddle him, then shove him away shortly after ohmy.gif) but she's mostly very sweet and loves giving him little kisses. I'm pretty sure she's more interested in seeing Miles most mornings than she is me laugh.gif

It's all been a very different experience to what I had with Penny, but it's fantastic. I actually looked forward to the labour and birth (for a while .. then I went overdue ...) and a week after the birth I watched the clock and thought about what I was going through at the time. It was kind of nice .. In a weird way!
