Hello all,

Im just starting the planning process, and I need some opinions. . .

We are currently looking at a lovley venue, which has a great package on offer, and this includes a bar tab amount for the reception. Im unsure as to how long it will last, but what I would really like to know is . . .

Would it be weird to ask the guests to buy their own drinks before sitting down at tables, so for Pre Dinner Drinks ??

The reason behind this idea is, while people are waiting for the Bridal party, who are off getting photos done, I dont want the possibility of the tab running out, even before we sit down. And someone told me, during the Pre Dinner Drinks stage, alot of people tend to get drinks, and then leave them at a table and forget about them while catching up with everyone . . .

Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks heaps,
One eXcited BRIDE xoxo

Not at all. We did this and its been the same at pretty much every wedding we have been to.

We didnt have a bar tab, just had a package for 5 hours so we decided to start the drinks when we arrived at the reception so they didnt finish an hour of so before everyone left.

Ours were included otherwise we probably would not have worried about adding in pre-dinner drinks. Most people generally went and hung out in a pub between the ceremony and reception anyway.

We had a 5 hour drinks package - but with the way the times worked out we were 30 or 45 minutes short of covering the pre-dinner drinks time. We arranged to have drinks charged on consumption during this period - but at the end of the night the venue said we'd not drunk as much in the 5 hour period as they thought we would, so they threw in the drinks during the additional period at no extra charge.

Another way around it is to pay for 2 bottles of red, 2 bottles of white and 2 sparklings (or whatever). to be poured and waited around the room during that period - and once it's gone it's gone.

While I can't imagine a group drinking the tab dry during the pre-dinner drinks, I suppose if the tab was smaller / the wait long and the guests ordering spirits etc. it could happen.

I don't think it's weird as such to ask people to pay for their own, but it's not been the done thing at the weddings I've attended.

Thanks for the feedback ladies.

The more and more I think about it, the more it makes sense to do this . . . As, the wait shouldnt be too long, as the ceremony, reception and photos will all be at the same venue. So I dont think it is too much to ask.

But then the otherside of my brain is saying the tab will last longer them Im thinking. The tab which is included in the package deal is $1200. Keeping in mind that there will be no more than 50 people, the venue is kind of out of the way near Mount Tamborine (so a quite a few guests will be driving) and it will most probably be on a Thursday (so some may work the following day and take it easy on the drinks) . . . Plus we wont be including spirits in the tab, so if the guests want to drink spirits they will be paying for them

??? unsure.gif ???

So that gives you $1200/50 or just over $24 per 'drinker' from the tab. If the venue is charging $8 per glass then that's around 3 drinks each. Soft drinks would likely be less. Maybe $4 each? So that's 6 softdrinks.

I'd be looking to see how much they are charging per drink and then working it out from there smile.gif

We are doing exactly the same, guests can purchase drinks between the ceremony and dinner.

Depending on what they're charging per drink, as you said a lot of your guests will probably drive, some might not drink and its weekday... doubt you'll be churning through the tab as some weddings on a saturday night with public transport would...

Our venue doesnt offer any drinks packages but they have been fairly cheap on everything else. We will provide beer and wine but no spirits.

We had approx 60 guests on a Saturday night with a $1700 bar tab - which only really got used up towards the end of the night as we were told we hadn't used it all yet and there was like an hour to go ... HELLOOOO SPIRITS tongue.gif

We kind of combated the bar rush though throughout the night by requesting a bottle each of red and white be kept on the tables at all times. Think it slowed people down because there were drinks within easy reach IYKWIM?

We paid for softdrinks & juices before the reception - but guests had to buy their own booze if they wanted it before we arrived after photos.

We had 60 people at our wedding (including bridal party) and only had tab for for the reception and we went through $1500 pretty quickly. And that was only wine, beer & soft drinks/juice! We must have had a bunch of pi$$ heads laugh.gif
