DS1's first big boy bed arrives in 6 weeks - his sister arrives in approx 9 weeks.

We have been given a cot for her, and there's already has a single bed in his room (so I wanted to see if he'd sleep in it before his bed arrives and we put everything together and he hates it!) so no issue if it all goes pear shaped and he refuses to sleep anywhere but his cot ... for now tongue.gif

Any hints or tips for me? DS1 is 14 months.

Personally, I'd probably hold out until he's a bit older.

If that's not an option, I'd remove the cot from his room and not give him the choice of cot or bed. A mattress on the floor might be worth a try, in case he's a bit scared of the idea of no sides on the bed and that he might fall out {okay, so obviously a 14 month old doesn't 'think' like that, but I'm sure you know what I mean laugh.gif}.

P's been in a toddler bed, and has now moved into her own single bed. She only has the single bed in her room, and I make a big deal about it being her 'big girl bed'. She seems to love it. There have been a couple of falls, but she hasn't tried to climb into the cot (set up in my room) and has adapted quite well. Good luck!

My DD is 20 months old and we put her in to a toddler bed about 6 weeks ago. I was expecting big problems as I thought that she was a little young really but she kept climbing out of her cot and it worried me. We made a big deal of how exciting and great her 'big girl bed' was and she went straight in to it no problem. The first night it took about 45 mins to get her to sleep and we had to keep laying her down but TBH it took her a good few nights to even work out that she could leave the bed on her own.

My advice would be to have the bed be the only option and if he really doesn't go for it then leave it a few more months. 14 months was way to young for my DD to have gone it to a bed but if you think that your DS will cope then there is no harm giving it a go.

Good Luck smile.gif

Thanks for the tips smile.gif I think he's too young as well - but DH is of another opinion rolleyes.gif

I tried for his first nap of the day - he wasn't having any of it LOL!! After 3 attempts at laying him back down I just put him back in his cot smile.gif I don't want to make it a big issue so will give it a little longer before trying again. DH will just have to wait to set up his new bed heh heh!!

When my DH has these types of amazing ideas I always say "that sounds great, be sure to let me know how that goes for you". He soon comes to the conclusion on his own that my way will do for now laugh.gif laugh.gif

If you leave the bed set up you might find over time he grows to quite like it - who knows, this parenting gig is a mystery to me smile.gif

We have only recently turned our cots into toddler beds, just shortly before the boys 3rd birthday and only because Liam was nighttime TT. I'm glad we waited this long as there have been no issues and they have never once gotten out of their beds and gone wandering or refused to go to sleep.

I think 14 months is far too young to understand about the boundaries of a bed and where in is and where out is. Boys also seem to take a bit longer to be ready to move, IMO.

Your son sounds like he is not interested anyway. You could also try selling your husband on the fact that he will be adjusting to having a new baby soon so you don't want to disrupt him even more.

I'm thinking DH will be my biggest obstacle - because he's Mr Itchy Pants to make things all "cool" for his son rolleyes.gif - maybe I should let him try to put him to bed a few times HA!! Like you said Myst - won't take him too long to come around to my views tongue.gif

I think I'll just let DH set up the new bed set once it arrives, pack up the old single bed and use the new bed for story time snuggles or something until DS is really ready to go into it smile.gif

I wanted to turn his cot into a toddler bed first but DH was all 'oh no - he'll go straight into the new bed" ... riiiiiiight!! LOL! Looks like I could just get my own way ... again ph34r.gif laugh.gif
