I’ve never been sure that I wanted to have children, and giving birth is one of my biggest phobias – it has been since I was a child.

Since meeting DH 12 years ago, things slowly changed and I began to wonder what our children would look like.

We finally took the plunge and tried to get pregnant last year, and were fortunate to fall pregnant after 3 months of trying. Despite missing one ovary, my periods and ovulation was very regular.

The pregnancy went well, other than the usual morning sickness, food cravings, swollen feet, and constant tiredness. DH and I managed to take our pre booked holiday to the US when I was 7 weeks pregnant – we went to Disneyland and all I wanted to do was lie on the pavement and have a nap. Or hurl.

Later in the pregnancy, I was almost diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and as a subsequence I need to be careful of my diet from now on. I also had higher protein levels in my urine so I had to monitor myself in case of pre-eclampsia and toxemia. I visited my physiotherapist regularly from 24 weeks as my pelvis was sore as were my hips.

The baby was measuring 4-5 weeks ahead consistently throughout the pregnancy and I was seriously considering an elective c-section – more due to my phobia of labour. I had previously been in immense labour like pain due to a torted ovary, and really, REALLY did not want a repeat of that pain – it was freaking horrible. I imagined labour would be much worse.

I started maternity leave at 34 weeks and DH and I moved to my mum and dad’s while out kitchen was being renovated. The kitchen was due to be finished 2-3 weeks prior to the baby’s arrival, however that was better than trying to renovate after the baby arrived!

Last Friday, I had just passed the 36 week mark and got up early to brush my teeth and have breakfast. I waddled to the bathroom and felt a rush of something between my legs and I rushed to the toilet to clean myself up and let DH know that my waters broke. I kept thinking to myself ‘it’s too early! I’m barely 36 weeks!!’

I called the hospital who advised me to monitor myself for the next hour and call them back. I called in an hour and was told the same thing again. By the third phone call, I had a two more small gushes – so the hospital told me to come in.

We arrived at 12pm and were eventually seen by a midwife an hour later. She wasn’t sure if my waters had broken so my obstetrician was called in and he confirmed that my water had indeed broken. As I had only had a few vague contractions by that stage (around 2pm), an IV was inserted and I was told that I would be induced later that afternoon. The obstetrician also did a stretch and sweep on me (ick) and I was induced at 4:15pm.

Within an hour my contractions went from 30 minutes apart to 2-3 minutes apart – the pain was pretty bad and while I was trying to breathe and count through the contractions, they were so close that I had trouble doing anything but groan most of the time. I asked for an epidural which gave me relief – but I could still feel each contraction, which surprised me. My blood pressure and temperature was rising, and the baby’s heart beat was rising. The midwife said that an emergency c-section may be considered if this continued.

By 8pm, My parents came to visit me to see how I was going. The obstetrician came soon after to check up on me and was surprised to say that I was fully dilated. Although my temperature was now almost 40 degrees he told me to push the next time a contraction came which I did. Later mum told me that they were waiting outside the birth suite and was surprised to hear me pushing almost immediately after they’d left the room!

With my midwife and DH supporting each of my legs, I kept pushing for over an hour and was getting really tired. Despite the epidural, I could feel immense pressure and some pain with each push. Finally the baby’s head started to crown and the midwife and DH had a good look at the tip of our baby’s head. Almost there!

The obstetrician could see that I was exhausted and advised that he would use a ventouse (vacuum) as well as an episiotomy to assist delivery. Although I had the epidural, I still felt her head pushing through and felt a little snip and the obstetrician cut me. All the while DH was watching down there with absolute fascination.

At 9:40pm, Ana was born and it was all done! She was placed onto my chest all gooey and she had a gentle cry while I was cooing over her perfection (writing this is actually making me teary). She was tiny – 2656 grams and 47cm long. Decent head size of 33.1cm – takes after her dad with his big head smile.gif

Afterwards I had to be given two bags of fluid to help bring my fever down, and both Ana and I were given several doses of anti-biotics in case we had infections.

As she was born at 36 weeks and 2 days, she had to spend a week in the special care unit. She was fed by tube for the first one and a half days and then once my milk came in I breast fed her. She also developed jaundice as she was a premmie and spent 2 days sunbaking under lights. While I was supposed to be discharged from hospital, Ana had to be held back and each day I had a cry because I was so hopeful she’d come home. Thankfully I was able to stay in hospital and visit her for each feed which made it bearable – all I wanted to see was her beautiful little face and hold her in my arms.

Yesterday (exactly one week later) we took little Ana home with us and have been settling in well ever since. DH and I have no idea what we’re doing, but are taking things as they come.
As the days go past, I can see that Ana looks just like her daddy – but much prettier of course smile.gif

I still can’t believe that I gave birth – something that I’ve feared for a long, long time. I also can’t believe that I am a mother!!!

Here are some pics of our little girl - just after delivery:
