Lovely to see this group up and running smile.gif
Rafferty Jack - 14th April 2012

I am off to Possum Cottage for breastfeeding session at the closest major hospital, the lactation consultant referred me. I hope it all goes well. I think the Diflucan is working on the breast thrush in the ducts because the pain is slightly improved and this is the first time I have managed three consecutive feeds on the breast - small achievements here smile.gif

Things are going well here, settling in and loving being a stay at home mum again. My boy is still a week off his due date- he was born before I even went on maternity leave!- , so we are still organizing some of the stuff we intended to do before he was born!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you girls and your lovely babies smile.gif

Chelley, I hope your visit to Possum Cottage goes well.

Zoey, sounds like your little man was eager to be in your arms early.

Nothing new for us. Harry has a different feeding pattern every alternate night. One night he will wake twice for a feed and every other night he will wake once. Well last night was meant to be a twice wake up but he only woke once, which was great for us.

He had his two week check up the other day and he has had a good weight gain and looks healthy. Which is great because it means his immune system will be getting stronger. We still can't have or visit anyone who is sick because he is still very likely to catch what they have. I can't wait until I get the all clear at six weeks from the ob's to exercise(I just feel like I need to get up and moving).

Well I better go get a shower in. Harry is asleep and Oliver is spending most of the day with the grandparents.

Possum cottage went well today. The lady said it could be the thrush and it could also be my nipples getting used to the shape of his palette. His breastfeeding and opening his mouth is improving, his attachment is perfect from looking at it so it will just be my nipples adjusting to his feeding style which may take 6-8 weeks she said.

I had been feeding him when the pain allowed and until I can't take it anymore and then topping him up - which she said is perfect. I was worried she was going to be a real breastfeeding nazi but she was lovely and just told me to pace myself into feeding since the nipples got so damaged. Nice to get some validation of what I was doing.

Today we also got a $450 bill for the paed who did the most cursory check of Rafferty when he was born and who didn't even bother to write in the blue book. Not likely we will be paying that bill.

Tess that is good only waking once over night - Rafferty is waking every 4 hours for a feed now

I'm glad it went well for you Chelley smile.gif it makes life so much easier when health professionals are helpful and supportive like that. The bill from the paed sounds a bit rich! If it was anything like our paed check he was with us for all of 10 minutes!

Tess once a night sounds blissful. Like Rafferty, Reuben is waking every four hours, and his last feed (usually between 4-5am) is hard to get him back to sleep. He doesn't cry so much, just wants us or to be held. My milk supply is crazy- it was never like this with my daughter. I woke up last night in a massive puddle, and that was with wearing breast pads! Often my body wakes me up with that let down feeling before he stirs for a feed.

I can't believe my boy is 2 weeks old tomorrow!

We have a check up/ weigh in with community health on Friday. Reuben went too far below his birth weight on day 3 and gave us a bit of a scare. Of course my my milk came in that day and between that and top up formula feeds he gained 200g in 24 hours! But they want us to check in to make sure he's still gaining etc.

K13, how is Violet going?

Chelley, glad your visit to Possum Cottage was good. My paed cost 380 at the hospital but he did check over him a few times for his Golden Staph. But they were always quick visits. Then when we had to take Harry to his actual rooms it was only 140 and he did a more detailed check. We have a green book this time. We had blue with Oliver but they changed over to a green book. My MHN was so happy that Harry's paed was very thorough filling it in. She said so many don't bother filling it in. I saw on facebook that you have a hairdresser in the making, lol!

Zoey, we were expecting Harry to wake more often over night because Oliver was still waking every three or four hours at this age. Glad Reuben had a gain when your milk came in.

Well Harry is still in 0000 clothing but they are getting short on his legs. Problem is he can't go to 000 because they are way to big around his shoulder and body. Even though PP clothing is not cheap it seems to be the best for Harry's length but not to baggy every where else on him. Anyone else having baby clothing issues?

Yes I can't believe Tess that Raffie is still in NB or 00000. We have found pumpkin patch to be the best fit too. My mum had to go and get some legless, short sleeved onesies for him because of this warm weather.

I am starting to feel worried how I am going to cope next week - Nick has been off work. For the next couple of weeks he will be home tuesday and thursday to help out but I will still need to drive Raya to daycare and pick her up. Not sure how I am going to carry Raffie in his capsule up 47 stairs to the street - it is just too heavy (even though it is light) with my c-section scar. May have to put him in Ergo for going up stairs but it is a lot of mucking around. Wish our bodies healed faster.

Chelley, hubby went back to work this week(finished early on Monday for Harry's two week check up). Oliver has playgroup on Friday mornings but my MIL takes him for me. I am under strict instructions I am not to do any heavy lifting for six weeks from how much they had to cut for my episiotomy. So hubby has to always carry they capsule. The heaviest thing I am allowed to lift is Harry(minus the capsule).

Today I was singing Rock a bye baby to Harry and Oliver got really upset crying. I asked what was wrong and he was concerned that Harry was going to fall. I am no longer able to sing that lullaby when Oliver is around.

We had our MHN appointment yesterday, it went so well. Reuben is over 3kgs already, and more than 500g above his birthweight! It's a but of a novelty to me to have a baby that's growing so quick. Mayana didn't gain that much till nearly 7 weeks (and was diagnosed with failure to thrive at about 3 months). I'm glad we won't have to go through that again!

I survived my first week at home with 2 kids on my own smile.gif Pete didn't get any time off work, he even went in for a couple of hours the day after Reuben was born! He hadn't been at his job long enough to get parental leave, and because my school doesn't pay mat leave we really couldn't afford for him to take time off. He does work very close by though and has been able to come home for his lunch hour every day so that has been

We had a rough night with Reuben. I've discovered he has a preference for tummy sleeping. He screamed for an hour on his back, and as soon as I rolled him over he dropped off to sleep. I rolled him back when I thought he was settled but he started screaming again. I wonder if his little tummy is hurting him and the pressure of laying on it helps. I'm not sure what to do.. I know it's not ideal for them to be on their tummies but it's the only way we could get any sleep last night. He does have incredibly good neck strength though and can easily lift his head and turn it from side to side while on his tummy.

Hope you all have a good weekend!

When Raya was in SCN they tummy slept her - it stops them from startling so easily. I don't know if it would be a massive risk as long as he can't roll - which he can't yet, his head is turned to the side and you are close by with no bedding close to his head. Or perhaps he can sleep on your chest for a little bit and lie on his tummy - Raffie likes that.

Well done Reuben on the weight gain.

We had some successful breastfeeds yesterday but then he chomped this morning - no idea why.

Zoey, I wonder if maybe he has some trapped wind but if he does he would be bringing his knee's up to his tummy. Well done on surviving the first week and pity Pete couldn't get parental leave. Well done on the weight gain Reuben.

Chelley, glad to hear you are getting some good breastfeeds in.

CLD, have added Aiden to the top of the list. I know what you mean about testing the boundaries. Thankfully Oliver hasn't been to bad.

Harry is well.

Someone has taken my predictable waking every 4 hours for a feed baby and replaced him with one I don't recognise.

The new Raffie now needs a 000 size bonds suit, he wakes easily, wants to be fed all the time and screams when I try to put him down in the basinette. I am going to look into motilium because the pacing of the breastfeeding while I get over thrush is in no way helping me keep up with his feeds. He is gutsing 150ml of formula and when I bf him he takes both sides for as long as I can manage and then a 60 - 70 ml top up. The nurse told us he would 'wake up' around 3 weeks and she wasn't joking. Last night he took 2 hours to settle after a feed.

Tomorow Nick is back to work for the first time which means I am doing all the night feeds and I need to drive Raya to schoolow and pick her up. Will be interesting to see how my scar goes and how I am going to carry Raffie up the stairs in his capsule. I guess the first time is always the worst and then it gets easier and soon becomes routine. Still feeling a bit nervous though.

Rafferty is so different to Raya - he has different sleep cues, WILL NOT take a dummy. Feel like a first time mummy all over again.

Hope everyone else is well
