Reading it from begining to end like that gave me chills. What an ordeal but what a fabulous reward at the end wub.gif

Congratulations to you both! How wonderful. A scary start, but you seem to be doing well! Congrats on establishing a beautiful breast feeding relationship!

Thanks everyone. It definitely was a scary experience and not something they tell you about at antenatal classes but I spoke to a social worker while still in hospital and she told me to take a photo of him every day and focus on that photo and not to look back.
It definitely helped!!
I am so so greatful that we have been able to establish breastfeeding as I know how difficult it can be and to be honest I don't think I could have handled it if we weren't able to. It took me a little while to not feel like a failure that's for sure!!

Thanks again for your kind thoughts and well wishes! We're one mônth in today!!

Happy 1 month little Patrick! Time to update your ticker wink.gif

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how did you go with your milk coming in and all that when he was in SCN? Did you pump right from the start? Did he get your colostrum? Sorry so many questions, but so many people are of the opinion that breastfeeding is an impossibility in situations such as this, and I'd love to hear your positive story as a counter-balance! (and feel free to completely ignore my nosiness if you wish).

None of the nurses initially helped with my milk coming in so it wasn't until late on the Sunday night when my MIL arrived from interstate that she started expressing me-she is a midwife. Hand express to start with. Then late that same night a really great nurse came in at 11pm and 3am to help me express my colostrum and we got about 1ml in an hr. I then used the pump from the next day every 3 to 4 hrs and a night time just when I woke up cos he was full term!

I continued to do this until the end of the first week and then I got to breastfeed and then they would just top him up because he was still too tired to have a complete feed!

By the time we were back at the original hospital I was fully doing all the day feeds and they would just give him a breast milk bottle at night time!!

Well thought I'd update.
My little fighter turned 1 yesterday.
12 months on we see no signs of anything long term affects from his birth. He has continually astounded us with his cheekiness, ability to not sleep much at all for 7 months and how much of a big boy he now is.

Last week I struggled a bit thinking about that time 12 months ago and would cry just at random things but I got over it by the weekend and we had a cheeky monkey party for him!!

He started to get a bit unwell on Sunday for his party and by yesterday for his birthday he was really sick. I took him to the dr and he has 2 ear infections and conjunctivitis.

I was really upset yesterday about the unfairness of it all that he was sick on his birthday considering how sick he was last year!! It just seemed so cruel.

But then I rejoiced in how far he's come in that 12 months and how lucky we are to have this little man in our lives!!

Oh no, sorry your little boy was sick AGAIN on 12 November! Perhaps you can celebrate his birthday when he's feeling better. So glad he is going so well after his rough start. What a fighter! smile.gif

Oh and by the way, I LOVE his name! wub.gif
