Hi all,

I don't post much on here, mainly read, but wanted to post our little man's story.

We fell pregnant within 2 months of trying and apart from some pretty severe pelvic pain from about 26 weeks I had an easy pregnancy.

Like most women I started to get really over it by the end but tried to keep busy walking, bouncing on my fit ball and eating fresh pineapple(had been told this helps bring on labour)!

On the morning of the 12th November I woke up about 3am with pretty severe back pain. I got up and had some panadol and tried to ignore it. Didn't happen. It continued to be on and off and I got up and dozed on the couch to try and get some rest.
At about 6am the back pain started to get more intense and more constant. I started to think maybe I was in labour. Hubby got up around 7:30 and made me real the birth suite to tell them I was in early labour. They told me to try and rest and it would probably be awhile.

About 8:30 hubby rang them again cos the contractions(still only in my back) became closer together and more intense. The midwives told hubby to start really timing them and to ring back if bub's movements slowed down.
Bout 9:30 I noticed bub's hadn't moved for ages so we rang and they told us to come in(they weren't very nice about it though and I'm sure they thought they'd be sending me home)

They started monitoring me and bub's heart rate was very erratic. They called a dr in and he decided to break my waters. Very surreal experience I tell you. They immediately noticed that my waters were a different colour and told me he'd most likely swallowed meconium.

Not long after that his heart rate went down to 50 and took a very long time to go back up. Decision was made for emergency c-section.
Trying to sit still while they put the spinal block in and still having back contractions was not fun. It took forever.
Eventually they got our little man and I didn't hear that cry. I was slightly freaking out. Eventually I heard the little cry and after about 10 minutes they brought him over to me and he was grunting (which apparently is not a good sign)!! I had a quick kiss and then they took him up to the special care nursery and hubby went too.
By the time I'd been in recovery and went up there he was in a humid crib and they were trying to give him some oxygen but he was fighting it!!

I then was taken to a room (I had the shakes really bad by now) and the decision was made to trnasfer both of us to another hospital as he was getting sicker and they couldn't deal with him anymore(current hospital was only level 2 and didn't cater for his needs).
They intubated him and transferred him over. I went about an hr later.

Things really started to go downhill from here. What was discovered was that he hadn't actually swallowed meconium he had inhaled it (so had meconium aspiration syndrome). He was a very sick little boy.
At about 2am on the 13th I was told to prepare for the worst and they called hubby to come back in. They told us they wanted to transfer him to Sydney but he wouldn't make the trip.
That day was the longest day of our lives and we were living hr by hr. I've never seen my hubby cry but I did that day. It was horrible. It was not something we'd ever expected and tried so hard to be positive!! It was so hard though!!
By that night he'd slowly started to improve and over the next 5 days he improved hr by hr. They took the intubation out on the Wednesday (so 5 days old) and put him on a cpap machine(like darth vader) which he stayed on for about 4 days then went to high flow.
It was such a frustrating time because while he was improving it seemed such s slow process and I just wanted to take my little man home.
After 10 days they got him to just oxygen and we were transferred back to the other hospital on the Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday they took the oxygen off and while his stats went up and down he held his own. On the Thursday they got me to room in with him for the night in a special room and Friday we got the all clear to come home.

So after 13 LONG days I was finally able to bring my little man home.
We have now been home two weeks and are working through things together. It's definitely a steep learning curve.
He is a very placid little man and only cries(well screams really) when he's hungry or lately when he's doing a poo.We have established breastfeeding well (I really thought this would be my biggest problem) and he has a great little suck on him but does need to learn to slow down.

His details:
Name: Patrick William
Weight: 3.790kg (8 pounds 5 ounces)
Length: 52cms (although they didn't do this till a few days later).

I already can't imagine my life without him.
Thanks for reading and sorry for the long winded post!! Hope it makes sense.

Melin xxxx

Congratulations Melin!

That must have been terrifying for you. I was nervous just reading that wondering what was coming next! I'm so glad he is recovered and everything is going well.

Sah I've been wondering whether I'd read your birth story.

It would have been terrifying going through what you did, and I'm so glad to hear that patrick is doing well with you at home smile.gif

Congrats to you and A xxx

And yes, I know who you are, and am using your old login so you can guess who I am smile.gif

Oh congrats on Patrick's arrival. Such a terrifying time for you, not what any expectant parent thinks they will have to go through but clearly Patrick is a strong boy. May you enjoy every blessed moment with him wub.gif

Congratulations on the arrival of your little man. Reading your story reminded me of the awful NICU roller coaster ride we had with our daughter. I am so sorry that you had to live through that but thrilled to read that you've had such a great outcome.

Congrats on the arrival of Patrick. I know how horrible the SCN experience can be. Your little boy sounds very strong and how wonderful to have him home at last

Congratulation. You are clearly a very strong person as is your little man. I hope you have a smooth run from here on. Also well done on breastfeeding after a long stint in SCN. He obviously knows what's best for him!

Oh Melin, it sounds like your little Patrick is a fighter! Congratulations on this wonderful news.
