I bought my best friend a Le Creuset (or the other brand that looks the same) French Oven, plus some herbs to grow and a book about cooking with herbs. (I really love her now-husband too, so wanted them both to enjoy the gift) For their wedding I bought a little port barrel/cask and some port glasses, because they enjoy drinking port together after dinner.
For our engagement, they bought us a cutlery set. For our wedding they bought us the phone from our gift registry, but added a note to the card about how it will help us to stay in touch.

When I am grown up I will understand how beautiful it feels to administrate my life effectively.
Until then I will continue to torch all correspondence that bores me and to dance naked over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

We were given a really nice crystal clock for our engagement, though not really to Brian's style, it is lovely and lives on our dresser.

What about a lovely set of silver/pewter photoframes?

A gift certificate to a restaurant you know they love is a favorite for a reason. One of my favorites is something decorative and classic - my favorite is art glass, but almost anything could work. I have given starving students a gift certificate to the grocery store, which was much appreciated.
