Hi ladies,

I am wondering when is the right time to introduce a pillow into the toddler's cot/bed, or if there even is a right time to do so.

Ben is only 18 months so I think it is too early. DH thinks maybe we could as he absolutely loves lying his head on a pillow out in the lounge room both at home and at my mum's place.

In my head I am thinking that you can introduce one from 2 years onwards but no idea why I think that.

So, at what age did you introduce a pillow???

I personally don't introduce a pillow until they are out of the cot (or the side of the cot is off). My 22 month old can't quite climb out of the cot (it's got high sides and he is short) but a pillow would provide just enough height to do so.

I introduced a very flat cot pillow (kmart $5) into DS's cot when he was nearly 2. I wanted to slowly start preparing him for a bed. He loved it straight away. He's never tried to climb out of the cot. I've not put a normal size but very flat pillow in there as we're taking the sides off his cot this weekend. I've also been trying to get rid of the sleeping bags and use sheets and blankets but that's not going so well, he wakes up more and out of the covers so we'll be delaying that change a big longer (maybe til summer).

We introduced a pillow to Liam when he was still in his cot about 3 months ago to prepare him for transition into his big bed. He had it for about a month in the cot and then moved into his big bed. So he would of been about 26 months old. Even with the pillow he couldnt get out the cot and I had never seen him even try.

From Memory I think I introduced a pillow alot earlier with Keira, more like 13 months.

They both still have the really flat ones, which I wouldnt be able to sleep with.

Jackson's had one since maybe 14 months. He has only recently started sleeping on it properly all night long. He's never tried climbing out of his cot so no dramas with him using it fir leverage

Personally I think, as long as they are okay to move around, like moving their heads etc, then it shouldn't be too much a drama, but then on the other hand you don't want it to be a stepping stone for the escape from the cot either.

I've tried to introduce a pillow into the boys cots but they are not interested. I also have the $5 ones from Kmart and they just use them to throw at each other rolleyes.gif even though they will happily lie on ours if they climb into our bed. I just figure when they ask for one, they can have one.

Hamish and Angus both had a toddler pillow (its a smaller quite flat version of a pillow) from around 13 months. They don't always stay on it, and in theory if you are worried you could remove it once they fall asleep too.

I've been wondering this. E usually sleeps between the pillows on our bed, but loves using them herself if she can get to one so I think she'd like a pillow of her own.

I only introduced one recently for DS and he's 34 months. He's still in his cot so I wasn't going to at all until I moved him into a big bed.

But he asked for it a few weeks ago so I just put one of the spare pillows we have in his cot. It looks massive in his cot but it's quite flat so I'm ok with it.

Personally I think there's no rush to give them one....unless they start asking for it! tongue.gif

Thanks for all the replies ladies. He certainly hasn't aske dfor one yet so I don't think I will bother right now.

When he hops in our bed on a weekend morning he puts his head on my pillow and then pushes my head off and gets annoyed if I try to put my head back on - somehow it quickly becomes HIS pillow laugh.gif
