Hoping that someone might be able to help with this -

My ex is looking at moving to another suburb and presently our DD goes to a Secondary school that his home is currently zoned for.
I'm sure its not the case, but we wont need to change her school if he moves will we?

And if she's already going to a school, does this mean that our other children will automatically be able to go there?

I've looked at the school website and also the department of education and can't find any info about it. I will be calling the school of course but wondered if anyone already knew?

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to move her. I'm not so sure about the other kids though

No, you won't have to move her.

Siblings are also first considered for out of catchment enrollments so it is likely your other children will still get to go too.

This is the case in qld, I think other states would be similar.

Sam you won't have to move her, there's no requirement for that in Vic. As for your other three, I'm not sure, but the school should be able to tell you. smile.gif

you should check with the school to find out how popular it is and how often out of area placements are granted. I have friends whose eldest goes to an out of area school and they've been told they won't get their other kids in cos there's never any spots for out of area placements. That school's policy may be different regardling siblings though.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't think Zoe would have to move and Lachie is already enrolled to go to the same school.

It's not definate that he's moving but the home he rents is being valued with the view to possible being sold, so it may change things for him. We just want to make sure before he makes any decision about where he'll move to.

I'll be giving the school a call today to check as well!

You won't have to move your daughter and I would find it highly unlikely that they would not accept your other children. I am in NSW

Just on the siblings, it definitely depends on the popularity of the school. I'm in Sydney and I know 2 families in different suburbs who have delayed moving until their youngest child started at their chosen school, because the school was completely closed for out of area enrollments, including siblings. Once you have started they will let you stay even if you move.

Yes we are also in Sydney and that is the policy for our local schools too, you cannot move and still get siblings in just because your oldest is in. I think it has to be this way as there are so many people who go to great lengths to get their oldest into a good school (e.g. renting a place in the catchment or using a friend/relatives address or paying someone to use their address - yes there has been at least 1 case like this come to light at one of our local schools) that if they allowed siblings in too the schools would simply be too overcrowded. I hope it works out for you, it is a shame that people who genuinely move get disadvantaged by others working the system but that's life I guess wacko.gif

If you don't mind me asking, what area is the school?

I am assuming you live in Victoria from you avatar and school zones in this state were abolished with the exception of specific schools that applied for it.

We live in Berwick (South east Melbourne) My DD goes to Berwick Secondary. Her dad lives in the zone and we don't.

Hey, we are neighbours! smile.gif

Unfortunately, Berwick is one of the zoned schools, but from what I remember, the zone will be changing next year because of the new p-9 college opening nearby. Perhaps it will rezone in your favour?

Hope it works out!
