However I am not a fan of having too much presence on the www so would like to ideally password protect the blog or allow access by invitation only so that not every man and his dog can look at it.
Is this possible?? and if so does anyone have any tips on where and how to set a blog up as I have absolutely no idea

You just send an email with the text you want on your blog, attach any photos you want in your post, and the site will update your blog automatically.
I found it easier to use than Blogger since you don't need to fiddle around with it as much.
ETA: Would love to see some before and after piccies when you're done. Good luck with the renos!

There are ways that you can make Blogger select certain posts to be password protected too. So for example, you could share general renovating photos with the world, and then private family photos with only those you give the password to. I have done this in the past with post about our fertility treatment on my public blog, where only a select few were invited to read (and it was mainly for my own journal recording).

Crisis, of course I am more than happy to share some piccies with you, you will probably hear the yell of delight when it is done from your place and then I will upload a few for you to have a look at.

Are they on Facebook? We have a "secret" family page on FB where we (my siblings, my kids, their kids, cousins etc.) all keep each other updated with what is going on. It works really well.
That is a good idea, now to convince them that they need to join... hmmm wish me luck there as they have never even seen facebook!!
Are you able to set up a 'smith family' page and just set the privacy as high as possible or do I just post on my page with just allowing access to them?
