Guitar Help - Does anyone play?
Posted 06 October 2010 - 10:01 AM
He currently has/plays a 3/4 student acoustic guitar - which he got for christmas a few years back. He has been advised by his tutor that he needs a full size guitar now, and he plays an electric at school.
I would prefer an electric acoustic - DH would prefer a straight out electric (and so would DS probably)...... we have been offered a SX junior series electric guitar with an amp - 'meg@' brand amp. I have g@@gled them and they seem to be around $200. It doesn't look much bigger than the one he has now - in length.....but i think the neck might be longer, which is what DS said he needs.
Do you know about those guitars? Are they any good? We want to get him something that is fairly decent, happy to buy him a good second hand guitar (we missed out on an awesome deal recently )
What would you suggest for a budding young muso - who loves playing his guitar, is happy to strum away in his room and is thinking about busking (next year) for some pocket money. He has played for 2 years now and is doing so well, he plays solo at school!
I don't want to get him something cheap and nasty - but we don't know anything about guitars at all - so any advice about good brands etc would be great.

He has suggested that the SX Junior might be a bit too cheap to last to long.
He buys a lot of stuff from Billy Hyde Music Guitar Packs. He said the Fender pack and Yamaha pack shown on the link both look good. He also said remember to bargin if you decide to go into a music shop to buy something, he has never paid full price for anything in guitar shops.
Brands he suggets are Yamaha, Fender or Ibanez. Yamaha and Fender (the lower end ones) should all easily last till he is 16. Ibanez and higher end Yamaha and Fender will last even longer but you would be looking at at least $700 just for the guitar.
You might be able to pick up a second hand Ibanez at a good price, check out ebay.
Hope that helps.

I'd recommend fender or ibanez also. M@rshall for an amp.
As for electric vs electric acoustic - depends on what sound your son is after and what songs he's wanting to play. An electric acoustic does not sound like an electric, it just provides amplification of the acoustic sound. Electric will provide effects, like the whammy sounds, feedback etc.
Also, if he's considering busking and doing covers, I can highly recommend the Licks DVDs. They come in a broad range of bands/songs and tutor the licks of those songs.

I will check out ebay - I think that will be the way to go. We have promised him a guitar if he gets 4 or more B's on his report card at the end of term 4 (not including music - as he blitz's that! ) but he is getting one anyway, for his b'day - BUT if he actually gets the 4 B's - I would like to get something extra special - so I think that a good second hand Ibanez might the one we will get. (IF we can get one!)

I would also recommend getting good quality strings, it makes a world of difference, sound wise, and keeping in tune. I use Elixir strings on my guitsr, they are on the expensive side, but they are the best.
Yamahas are good entry levels too, I personally am not a fan of Ibanez's the one I have isnt a great sound.
Toward the other end of the price spectrum.. My FAVOURITE guitars are Matons.
