Hi All,

After posting a few times in the relationship thread it looks like I will be joining you girls in here. We have agreed to give counselling ago but not sure if it will work for us.

I want to know what I should do when we do, I'd like to be orginised as I dont want to struggling financially as well.

Do we need to apply for a separation?

What do I need to do re centre link??? as I am currently on matternity leave

I know I might sound a bit ahead of myself but I need to be for my childrens sake.

Thanks again.

I might be wrong but I think you need to be living in separate accommodation before you are viewed as separated. Once this happens just go into Centrelink and you can fill out a form for Single Parent Pension, plus you will get more Family Tax Benefit A and B, maybe rent assistance, a concession card, etc. Just make sure that you go see them ASAP because the pays you get from them start from when you first make contact with them - not from when you separated.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

I'm sorry that it might be coming to this sad.gif

With regards to centrelink, i wouldnt suggest going in i would ring up and do the interview over the phone to apply for single parents. (Are you on paid mat leave? as this could affect your payments). Then at the end of the interview they will arrange an interview for you. You can also advise of an intention to apply for a payment over the internet, and then they will call you to do the interview.

You can apply for seperated under one roof (ie still living together) but it isnt easy to have approved and requires constant interviews and proof.

If you want to know an approx of what you would be entitled to jump ontp the website and use the rate estimator.

All the best
