Vanessa had a good idea with getting someone out and they use one of those electricty monitor things. I guess some appliances use alot more power than others, for example I didn't know that about kettles.

Your lucky you can swap suppliers, in Perth there is no choice!

Our usage hasn't changed but it seemed we just keep getting hit with increase after increase. I compared our bill a fortnight ago to this time last year, very similiar usage yet it was $80 more for the 8 week period!

I should get into paying a little each week too.

General rule is that anything that heats, will cost more to run.

That said im over the increase in prices - we have gone from a house that had 3 air conditioners costing us any where from $400-500 a quarter to this house that has none we are paying $350-400 but as it has gas add another $110 so we are actualy paying 460-510 so not happy. As our usage has dropped slighty but every price hike and it goes up - next bill shall be interesting as QLD gov approved 13% increased.

I just swapped elec companies and locked into a 2yr contract all cos they offered a 6% discount on each bill and if i ever wanted out it was going to cost $50 - so going by my bills i will have saved that $50 exit fee after two bills .

Oh EM - don't get synergy to do smooth pay or whatever it is, as according to them I would be paying $75 a fortnight, so I set it up as Bpay for $50 a fortnight.

When I was in Melbourne I used Red energy and I found them to be fantastic, I had it set up to take $50 a month (this was a few years ago, when I was living alone and working full time) and they used to give you a pay on time discount. Also I believe they support and use green energy.

Man I wish they were here I hate Synergy with a passion.

Ours was always around the $150-$200 mark and our last bill was $254, and that is including my discount for concession.

I am not sure what else I can cut! I already rug up before turning anything on, then have a hot drink. I do need to stop having the tv on all day though, given I have a new laptop I have to re-do my Itunes so I guess I can have that on.

Yes Synergy are bloody lucky they are the only company in WA. I rang to set up DD and they assigned my account to someone who had a $700 outstanding bill, so they took that out and I had to fight with no less than 3 people to get it back. In the end the day I was induced I was in tears to one manager who eventually refunded it.

I second checking your hot water system. I work for a HWS company so we get a few calls about high electricity bills.

Check to see if there are any leaks from or around the tank because if it's leaking, it'll be continually heating and costing you more money.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I hear that electricity prices are set to soar. What I've been told is around 60% in the Eastern states and 80% in WA. Basically we've been paying below market rate for a looong time and now the infrastructure is falling apart and the only way to find the money is through price increases.

We are getting another 10% rise in July. That is going to hurt, a lot. Apperently they are going to increase the concession discount. The enviro in me looks on the bright side and it does challenge peoples use of electricity but the cash-strapped mother in me wonders where this extra money is going to come from?

My HWS is gas and is about 18months old, so that wouldn't contribute.

We put money aside each pay to cover bills, so the actual payment isn't the issue, I just don't understand the dramatic increase.

Do you have any outside power points or any in the garage? A neighbour or workman might be 'borrowing' a point.

Are your tariffs the same for your usage as previous months? We had a change (not sure how or why) which resulted in a dramatic increase.

An 80% increase in WA! OMG, that is huge! ohmy.gif

It sounds to me like you could have a faulty appliance (new or not).

Similar thing happened to us years ago. Got a huge bill and we were away house sitting for 6 weeks of that quarter so not even living at our apartment. That's what alerted us to a problem. Turns out our fridge was faulty and sucking up a LOT of power.

I'd get someone in as the other girls have suggested to check them out.
