So I just got my electricity bill. Just as a point of reference, it's only hubby and I, and our most expensive bill prior to this was around the $180 mark.

This one is $337 mad.gif

On the graphy thing, it shows the last 6 bills and this one. The highest usage in those last 6 bills was 8.8 units (average about 7.5) and this one is now 14.4. Our meter reading was accurate (hubby checked)

We have not purchased any new appliances, or started using anything new etc. We turn the vast majority of our electrical items off at the wall where possible, our fridge is 12 months old and has a high efficiency rating. We are awake for around 20 mins in the morning before leaving, and are only home for about 4 hours of a night before going to bed..

I just called the electricity supplier and was 'one of those customers' and basically was told that I used it, I pay for it, which I clearly understand, however I still don't get it why my usage has apparently doubled where I have had NO lifestyle changes, and am quite conscious of the amount of electricity we use.

Her only other suggestion was that electricity prices increased 21% last July - which still doesn't answer my question why apparently my usage has doubled and the price increase so dramatically in this bill only?

I checked that I am not contracted, and can switch suppliers at any time. Is there a great cost difference between suppliers?

Has anyone else had any issues?

That is a huge increase.

I am not sure where you are but in WA someone can come along with an electricity monitor and it sees exactly what power things are using. Which reminds me, I must do that for myself.

wow thats a big increase!! We have the opposite at the moment. Ours for this quater was only $280 which is down from our last for some unknown reason unsure.gif Most of them are well up in the $300's (I was sure it would be more). There is 4 of us and im home most the day and we use the air con! I would see if you can do what Vanessa suggested and get someone to come and check whats going on for you.

Check your hotwater system, and how old it is.

Bri is an electrician, and assured me that our 15 year old hot water system was not using more power than it should. Yet when we renovated and installed a new hot water system, our usage dropped considerably.

I wish our bill was only $200, ours is normally around $380/quarter ph34r.gif

My only suggestion would be to check your previous bills to see if they were actual readings or just estimates. If they were estimates then they may be doing a make up with actuals this time around, which totally sucks.

My sister in-law had someone come around and check her usage and suprisingly boiling the kettle uses a lot of electricity. Probably not much help to you.

You're lucky that you can switch suppliers. Where I am in NQ, we only have one supplier and our quarterly bills are up around $500/$600 (and we don't have a pool or second fridge etc). It's a rip off!!

I think electricity is set to sore. I have changed companies twice in the last 12 months getting better discounts each time. My husband and I are currently consuming the same amount in electricity, then we were living in a household of 4 very lazy people in 2008.

I'm in QLD and I swear our bills are always the same no matter what we do! Always just over $400 and there is just the two of us.

It was the same amount when we used to rent (with housemates) so four people in total.....very much a rip off.

There is nothing more depressing that getting your usage down, yet the bill is still more expensive than your previous one with higher usage.

Plasmas use a heap of power in comparison to LCD's - what sort of telly do you watch at night? This could be part of the problem.
