Hubby and I have been trying to decide for a while whether to get a vapouriser for our little girl's room, and a current cold has just reminded us!

Do you use one? Do they really work? Is there anything in particular to look for when buying one? How much are we generally looking at?

Our daughter had three straight months of colds etc last winter and gets a rattle in her chest for weeks and weeks after being sick so this is the kind of thing we were hoping it might help.

Yep and yep. We bought the Vicks one, I think it was about $50 at the chemist. You can add eucaluptus or something like that for older bubs as well or just the water. Eukybear Rub or similar is also helpful in helping them breathe easier. Lily has had 3 colds already and for the last time we had the vapouriser and it cleared up quicker than the other ones.

I've got one that's been in our family since I was a kid. I swear by it, they are a must for anyone with small children.

I buy the liquid solution stuff for it from the chemist. It's specifically made for vapourisers. Otherwise you can just use vicks

So bizarre I was thinking of posting the same question about humidifiers. Are they the same thing?

Are they not suitable for under 12 months, hence why posted in this section?

Hmmm now you have me wondering tastebud? Not sure if they are the same or not?

Not sure about age recommendations but the only reason I posted in here was because that's the age bracket my daughter is in wink.gif

We picked one up when the colder months hit last winter and it was great I swear by it. Best $40 I have spent in a long time.

Tastebud - we had Ethan's last winter when he was around 6 months. I cannot see anything wrong with using them when they are young especially if it clears their nose and helps their breathing etc smile.gif

We have the vicks one and have been using it since E was about 7 months old. I honestly think it is a godsend when she's snuffly. It makes it much easier for her (and therefore us!) to get some decent sleep. I love it so much that I recently gave one to a friend as a baby shower gift laugh.gif .

I only add about half the amount of the liquid solution as it suggests on the bottle though. I find it gets a bit too strong otherwise... but other than this it is a brilliant machine.

I think a humidifier and vaporiser are the same thing.

We got ours when Amelia had her first cold at 2 weeks old! We've used it every time she's had a sniffle, cold etc and it always helps her breathe more easily and therefore sleep better!

Highly recommend one!

You can use them at any age, but my chemist said not to use the solution stuff in it until 8ish months I think? Just use the water only

We spent $50 on a chemist one, can't recall the brand, but we also use the solution sold at the chemist.

Just remember to crack a window open or something, otherwise you'll end up with wet walls wink.gif

We never bought a vaporiser, but when Jackson had a cold a little while back, we bought a Sudaclear plug in vaporiser thing from Woollies (looks like those plug in mozzie zappers) that has pads you put into it - best thing EVER!!! Cleared him up so good!

Have to agree, if Logan has a cold, he is 10 times better during the day if he had the Vaporisor going the night before, than if he didn't. They are the best.

My happy little boy!

I bought one when DS was four months old but found he coughed non stop when it was running. Perhaps I had the mixture too strong? I haven't used it since.
