Thank you to everyone for your congratulations, it does feel amazing to have reached something I thought was impossible.

Now the next hard lesson you will need to learn is how to be able to treat yourself to the nice things in life again without going back to the old habits. Just make sure you have the money saved before you buy the item/treat.

Leapstar - this is so true, and to be honest, even after everything I've done I still wonder if I could slip back into old habits! I now don't have a credit card at all and anything I do 'need' tongue.gif, OH and I discuss it first so I know it's something I actually can have rather than just want... might sound over the top but it's working for me smile.gif On top of that everything I was putting into debt is now going straight into saving/shares so I won't even notice that I have 'more' money! Signed up for life with this boy I tell you.. rolleyes.gif hehe

QUOTE(*manda* @ Feb 23 2010, 05:02 PM) View Post

We have done similar..no credit cards, but personal loan and stupid finance debt. We cleared a massive tax bill before xmas, and that was a huge relief for us, so now we are moving onto out finance debt, its not easy, but that bit of relief we felt at xmas paying off our tax was an awesome feeling, so I cant wait to keep doing it!

*manda*, I think I got a bit addicted to paying things off too! I would get SOO excited when I paid one whole card off or one loan ph34r.gif laugh.gif

QUOTE(nephthys @ Feb 24 2010, 12:52 PM) View Post

The hardest part must have been that for all that debt and money spent, you would have had very little to show for it.

nephthys - this is so so true. I had hardly anything to show for it.. not a nice wardrobe, not an excessive car or an extensive travel diary... nothing. All because it was bits and pieces here and there rather than big things or good quality things...

QUOTE(Mark$Girl @ Feb 23 2010, 05:12 PM) View Post

Since then, we have bought our own home, sold 2 of our cars and bought another in their place(which we don't owe any money on) and we both have savings of about $10K each!! Not to mention our joint account which also has about $20K in it!!! I feel that we are very fortunate and for that i can sympathise with your story biggrin.gif I too would never have been able to do it without my OH, and i laugh about it these days and say "Geez, i'm becoming as tight as you now...LOL, think you've worn off on me" and he just laughs at me!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Mark$Girl, yours is a great story too! All things that I have to look forward to now! smile.gif We joke that OH has rubbed off on me too... I struggle to justify some of the cheapest things now hehe

QUOTE(goodgirl @ Feb 23 2010, 07:36 PM) View Post

Congratulations on an amazing effort to get rid of your debt and what a great OH you have by the sound of it. Hang onto him tight and good luck with the next debt-free phase of your lives.

That's an awesome achievement! Congratulations! Thank you for sharing something so very personal.

I have just paid off one of my credit cards and it truly is the best feeling! Now, just one more credit card to go ($8000) then I'm done! biggrin.gif It really can be done with a little (okay, sometimes a LOT!) of sacrifices.
