In previous years I've given up chips (complete addict here), soft drink, junk food, spending money on 'me' stuff (that was harder than it sounds!) and coffee. I've also 'added' exercise one year instead of taking away - I had to exercise four times a week during lent... There are others but I don't remember.

Giving something up or adding something DOES work for me - every time I want a coffee during Lent and I realise I can't have one, I'm thinking of why I've given it up, so it puts God and Lent to the forefront of my mind.

Not sure what I'll give up this year - when does Lent start? (I'm completely out of the loop now I'm not at work and hearing of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday!) I think I might make it a 'do something' year again, maybe something to do with exercise and getting out of the house now that I'm sitting at home smile.gif

Thanks for the topic, Lent hadn't even crossed my mind yet this year!

Jantastic - lent starts today 9/3

I've given up chocolate and already today I'm rapidly realizing how many foods I eat have chocolate in them! It is certainly going to be a test for me.

I haven't given up anything this year! I've got a devotional to go through and I'm determined to finish it this year though...so I guess that instead of taking away, I'm adding?

Chocolate would be impossible for me to give up- I have to stop so many other delicious things in pregnancy, it just wouldn't fair to say goodbye to chocolate as well!

I feel like ive cheated a bit ( im new to being a catholic and will be welcomed into the faith easter saturday but have been studying and following the faith at RCIA classes and going to mass)

I gave up having my hubby around to help during the week and also just having him around - because from just before lent hes been working away during the week. I didnt have a choice in this but i thought it was a good thing to say im giving up

but that may be cheating I guess its how i handled it.

Next year ill make a conscious choice it sounds like its very positive thing for yourself as well as your faith
