I went to an Expo today and a mobile Hairdressing and MUA service were offering Free trials of Hair and Make-up. I filled out the form and the woman said she could contact me through the week to arrange a day to do it. When I asked if we had to book on the trial day, she said no, and that they would call me a week after the trail to see if I wanted to book them for the wedding.

What is everyone's take on this? Is it normal for people to give their trials away for free? Surely they will be missing out on a lot of $$$. Has anyone had a 'free' trial before and did it include any extras?

Of course Id love the opportunity to have a trial for free. We have a lot of events coming up that I could easily do with a professional making me look good! Im just a bit weary. I keep thinking to myself "If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is..."

You already know of my recent experience with make up artists.

With the most recent MUA, the one I am going with, the trial was free, and you pay on the day!!! I thought she would at least want a deposit. She said we will just sort it on the day. What a girl biggrin.gif I found her at a bridal expo also.

I think these people are confident enough with their work to know you will book once the trial is done.

Unlike other hacks, who have to get money anyway they can and bully you into having them do your make up .....but let's not go there laugh.gif !!!

You make a good point there T. Good professionals should be confident enough in their work that they don't need money for every single thing. Your story definately proves that theory! And imagine the extra clientel they will recieve by giving away a few freebies?

Will just have to wait and see if and when they call me smile.gif

From a business stand point I can understand. When you attend an expo it is very exxy so you want to provide specials etc to try to make more bookings as a result to pay for the outllay of the store. We wll often cut down things to really very cheap with minimal profit n them purely to increase sales, awareness, publicity and once you get a customer if you are cnfident in your product/services then it wll pay off.

I couldnt agree more with Heather.. I myself am a MUA and i've also set myself up at expo's before.. Expo's for a MUA can start from $800 for the day, up to nearly $2,000...!!! So trying to woo people to your services is the main priority.. My tact before was to give the bride her makeup for free on her wedding day and any others charged.

Regardless of whether a professional is confident in their services, regardless of whether I do an AMAZING job on a client, I wont lie and say that all these services are still driven to save a dollar.. I did it myself, so why wouldnt a client do it to me.? If I'm even $5.00 dearer than another MUA I can still bet my kit on it that I could lose clients to this savings.. Don't look at me wrongly on this, this is fact.. I am absolutely confident in my work.. I get editorials, commissioned work, magazine work and still have picky brides... But I love what I do so I still tailor that part of this industry..

If the original poster is unsure of her intentions (if any are wrong), possibly get her to email you.? Get her to confirm what the transation is.. Make sure you have it in writing what she is wanting to charge you.. From trial, to the actual day.. Then you cant go wrong.!
