Oh Drom, I've only just read this sad news - I was really hoping Fidel would make it and I'm very sad to hear he has passed away.

I have a theory about pets and the connections we make with them, I think that it's possible to find pets that are like what we'd refer to as 'soul mates' if they were people. I think with some pets we form an unexplainable, unconditional bond, when we just 'click' and can't imagine being without them. I feel like this with our dog, and I know that while my hubby loves her too I think my bond with her is different. Perhaps Fidel was a 'soul mate' pet for you and that's why you had such a bond and why you will naturally find his passing so devastating.

Take comfort in knowing that the time he spent with you was special to you and to him, and that you did everything you could to fight his illness, more than many people would. He was lucky to have such a wonderful family.

Rest in peace Fidel, I'm sure you will always be loved.

In memory of Fidel - obviously a special lil guy!! He will be missed by his 'mum' & 'dad'..

My Forever Pet
There's something missing in my home,
I feel it day and night,
I know it will take time and strength,
Before things feel quite right.

But just for now, I need to mourn,
My heart -- it still needs to mend.
Though some may say it's "just a pet,"
I know I've lost a friend.

You've brought such laughter to my home,
And richness to my days…
A constant friend through joy or loss,
With gentle loving ways.

Companion, pal, and confidante,
A friend I won't forget,
You'll live for always in my heart,
My sweet, forever pet…

Thank you all for your wishes for our beautiful Fidel.

I can't believe it will be a week on Sunday since we lost our little man. sad.gif

We are still heartbroken and miss him like crazy. sad.gif

The Animal Emergency Centre sent us a gorgeous bunch of flowers on Monday with a lovely card. That was so sweet. She told us that as the news filtered through to all staff about Fidel, they were all upset. He spent such a large amount of time staying with them (a week) and then regular visits over the 2.5 weeks that they all got to know and love him.

I went to David Jones and picked out a huge hamper full of chocolates, sweet and savoury munchies, coffee, tea and wine. We are going to take the hamper in next Saturday when Gerri the vet that primarily looked after Fidel is back on duty (she's on leave this week). We want to give the hamper to her first and then she can take it in for the rest of the staff.

We are also going to make a up a card with Fidel's photo on it to put on the wall. We noticed they had lots of cards from owners with pics of their animals that they had saved and not saved.

We did speak with Gerri the vet Friday morning and she said that no test results had come back as yet. But, she will speak with us at length over a coffee next Saturday. She mentioned that she thought that Fidel had something that they'd never seen before wrong with him. And that she may use him for a research paper to present at a conference.

It would be really good to find out what was wrong with our little man. It would give us some closure I guess.

Moni has been a great support to us this week. She's been very very cuddly and she isn't a cuddly little girl. She can sense that we are sad.

Ruby that is such a beautiful poem. It sums up how we feel so much.

L's Angel ....I think you are spot on with your post. Fidel was definately a soul mate to us, especially to hubby. He missed him so much, as do I.

We went back to the Animal Emergency Centre this morning to speak with the vet who primarily looked after Fidel to discuss his results. We also dropped off the hamper for all the staff, some morning tea for them (cakes from our local bakery) and a beautiful card that I got the printers to print up with Fidels picture on it.

Basically, the vet told us that we finally had an answer as to what was wrong with Fidel. He had Severe Chronic Periportal Lymphoplasmacytic Cholangiohepatitis. I think she referred to what he had as Cholangio which is very very rare and not curable. His liver was basically in the last stages of severe cirrhosis. There is a treatment for it but it may have only bought him a short amount of time and he would have been on steriods twice daily. And with the severity of the damage to his liver, well steriods probably wouldn't have been an option for him.

So our little man was very very very ill. It still breaks our heart that he was so ill and we couldn't save him. sad.gif

It was lovely to speak with the vet again today. She has been so wonderful to us through all of Fidels illness and afterwards. It was difficult seeing them all again and we did manage to make the vet cry again. blush.gif

SmittenKitten I agree with you about the wonderful work that the AEC do. They are amazing. Makes me realise how menial my job is and how satisfying their work is. They do such amazing work for animals.

So I guess we finally have closure. We are still grieving for our little man and miss him so very very much. It was hubby's birthday yesterday and we really felt Fidel's loss so much last night. As hubby said, he should have been here with us for his special day. For part of hubbys present I printed out a card with his favourite picture of Fidel on the front and also framed 3 pictures of him so we can hang it on the wall in our bedroom. He loved them both.

On the flip side, we took Moni in to see the specialist about her cataracts as he works from the AEC at certain times. The specialist told us that the chances of having a kitten with cataracts is about the same as winning tattslotto! rolleyes.gif I guess we are destined to have animals with unusual conditions. But, the good news is that he was very pleased with her eyes. He said besides the cataracts everything else looked good with her eyes and that he believes that her body will slowly dissolve them over time. He could see where they had started to dissolve a little bit already. So he wants us to give her drops in her eyes and then see him again in 6 months unless her vision appears to change or she has discharge from her eyes or the whites go red. So we were pleasantly surprised with the result.

We'd always expected that Moni's cataracts would have to be operated on at a fair expense. And that Fidel would be the healthy one. How wrong we were.

I just wanted to thank you all again for your wishes. They truly mean so much to us. Thanks to you all.

Drom I am so sorry. I have just read all 7 pages and I am so sad for you. Fidel was a beautiful kitty and I am sure he knew how much you and your hubby loved and cared for him. How lucky he was to have such loving parents, I am sure he knew you did everything for him.

RIP Fidel.

Amy xoxo

My happy little boy!
