Hi, we've decided that we're going to go to Tassie for our honeymoon, take the car etc. When we were looking at the website for the Spirit of Tasmania we noticed that it's quite expensive. I was just wondering whether you booked a recliner chair of an actual room and what you thought of it. Don't want to spend money that we don't have to!
Thanks

I just went over there last month on a school camp. We all had the bunk style rooms booked-came with 4 beds and an ensuite. I spent most of the night up with VERY sick kids so I had 2 hours sleep total and I can't say I enjoyed it all that much. Most kids spent the night out of their bunk bed sad.gif

I did however spend lots of time in the lounge area as the kids felt better if they were sitting up. Even if you get a seat, lots of people spend their night in the lounge area downstairs, but if I went with hubby I would have preferred the room to just a seat.

If you plan to take your car over then it is ok, but there are such cheap flights and great deals on car hire that I don't think I would ever take the boat again. The one hour flight back was HEAVEN compared to the trip over biggrin.gif

I went years ago and had a room - TBH all I can remember is that the bathroom is REALLY tiny and it freaked me out a bit - I think it would be a long trip on the recliner (plus teh whole other people snoring etc - not a romantic start to your honeymoon) - where as in the room its a cool start to your holiday (even with the extra small bathroom) - enjoy whatever you decide

We went when it travelled from Sydney to Tassie & got a room on the way down. On the way back we only went from Tassie to Melbourne & drove home & got recliner seats, they were SO uncomfy & we ended up laying on the floor, we'll be going down at xmas time again & will def be spending the extra to get a cabin, I think it's just nice to have a bathroom/bed etc.. But then again we'll have a 10mth old so that's help me make my mind up, so if it's only you & hubby perhaps the $ is better off spent down there then for transport ??

I got a recliner seat going down. The word recliner is basically a lie!! I ended up on the floor as well, and for the return journey forked out whatever was necessary to get a room, the savings were NOT worth it.

I've done heaps of trips on it. Never done the recliners though... I couldn't handle it.

One time I got a good APEX deal and DH (then boyfriend) and I had a double bed cabin on one leg. It was nice to have the extra room - but not really worth the extra money!

Definately ask about the APEX fares. We got an outside cabin for less than a sitting up seat! Basically they are like discounted air fares. They have a certain number of cheap ones on each leg and once they are gone, they are gone, so get in early and book.

We wet to tas for our Engagement honeymoon, we got engaged about 4 days before we left wink.gif We had to slightly change the dates of our holiday (like by one day) to take advantage but I think it was well worth it. Meant we didhave to put up with anyone elses snoring etc. And the bathroom was fine. Just a tiny room with a toilet and shower and basin, but what more do you need.

It was nice looking out the window in our jammies as we were coming into Devonport in the morning...

I just had a quick look. They don't seem to advertise the APEX fares but I think they still do them.

I just asked the call centre and they told us what days they were available.

You have to book it through call centre. After weeks and weeks of research and reading lots of different brochures and scrolling through every page of the website I found out about them by accident really and rang up and enquired and was pleasantly surprised.

Yep it may be cheaper to fly and get a rental. We recently went on a road trip on the mainland and the only reason we took the boat was cause we had a 4 month old and was too much hassle to hire a car with all her stuff...

There are no 2 berth cabins on the boat any more (that I know of) except for maybe suites. When you book for two people - or in our case 2 adults and an infant - they just assign you a 4 berth cabin - 2 bunk beds. The top bunks fold up against the wall if you like though which makes the room seem bigger. The bathroom is small, but it's a boat so you kind of expect it to be only what u need and no bigger, but to compensate I found the showers to have amazing water pressure!!
I've never done the recliners but DH has a few times, but only when he is by himself, when it is the two of us he thinks the only way to go is cabin..
Also I get nauseaus on the boat if its a rough crossing so would prefer to lock myself away in the cabin.
If you do go, I suggest buying good you might like to eat later for dinner and taking it for you, I don't know what the actual restaurants are like, but the basic food place I
found very average and very overpriced.

Have a great time though - Tassie rocks!
