"Waking up" from a dream...

A few weeks ago I went to bed after one or two too many glasses of wine (something I never do). A few hours later, I had a horrible dream that I had woken up to see a ghostly woman standing in our bedroom doorway, with a lantern. I panicked, and tried to wake my fiance, only I couldn't move. I then realised I was still asleep, so woke myself up, and then started talking to him about what I had dreamt. He reassured me, then we heard noises coming from our loungeroom. He got up to check what was going on, and grabbed a frying pan from beside our bed. I thought this was a little strange, then realised I was still asleep. I woke myself up again, and found myself lying next to sleeping fiance, unable to speak. I woke myself up again, and this time tried shaking him, but couldn't move my arms. I remember consciously thinking to myself, say something, and was murmuring loudly when I finally opened my eyes. I was very distressed by this point, and actually woke up my poor fiance, who had trouble convincing me that I actually *was* awake! Thankfully I was, and managed to fall back into a dreamless sleep!
Does anyone have any idea what on earth was going on??

I dreamed of a fairly typical morning - waking up, waving hubby off to work, feeding the cat, having breakfast, and jumping online. I actually woke up when I was confused as to why I was looking at a Windows interface rather than my regular Mac one.

it can be absolutely terrifying - but i've learnt to actively identify it when it's happening and get myself out of it quickly without having a heart attack (breathe and relax into it, count to 20..)
it happens to me when i don't get enough sleep and i'm stressed. i usually have 'dreams' that i'm being abducted my aliens and i can't move or scream (funny you mention that Soph!!)

Last night I had a nightmare, and then subsequently dreamt I'd woken from the nightmare and was trying to cuddle up to DH as he slept
The worst is when you think you're awake, but are actually dreaming and having another nightmare. Ick.
