Hi Girls

Just wondering if I can get some advice from you well travelled women? As a 29 year old mother of three children I havent had the chance to leave Aussie yet sad.gif

So where should we go? Rob has been to Jakarta for work but other than that we usually just do the 12 hour drive to QLD for the theme parks and the like. As this will be our very first holiday alone I really want it to be the best ever!!

Some ideas I had are

Bali - Is it to partyish for a honeymoon though?

Fiji - Ive head it's expensive there and someone even said dangerous ph34r.gif

A Pacific Islands cruise - My SIL did one of these a few years ago and she reckons they are boring as hell, are they?

Cairns or one of the QLD islands.

Any advice or feedback from you all would be fantastic, I have a budget of about $5-6k.

Thanks K

hmm if you are taking the kids, I have heard that Tre@sure Island in Fiji is fantastic. My sister and her family went a few years ago with their young boys and everyone had an absolute ball!

Not sure about expensive in Fiji (I think prices vary.. maybe get an idea on B3stflights or something?), and dangerous, well they have a strange political situation at the moment, but generally they don't stuff around with tourists as it is a major source of income.

Thailand is somewhere you might want to consider, or Vanuatu...

I guess have a think about what you want to do - do you want to laze on the beach the whole time and drink cocktails, do you want to shop up a storm and dance the night away, do you want to eat dinner on the beach by candlelight? Not all places will give you all options.. so if you can figure that much out, it's probably a good start smile.gif

Vanuatu is amazing if your staying at one of the resorts! Plus shopping over there is quite good and a lot of the shops accept the aussie $$$ (well they did when I was there 3 years ago).

Have you thought about Hawaii, you can get some amasing package deals for over there, you can get a good mix of hanging by the beach doing nothing, experiencing a place that really never has winter, and some great shopping, plus the exchange rate is good atm..

As for Fiji, if you are going to stay at a resort island you won't have a problem, but the mainland can be a bit dirty. The people over there are fantastic, but will do anything to get you to spend your money - this was my experience 2 years ago with some friends. However if you have ever thought about what Paradise would like like... It is definitely the Fijian islands, you won't want to come home!

Hope this helps!

It depends what parts you go to. The dirty and pushy parts are the Indian towns and Indian areas of the bigger cities.

Thanks to colonial rule, the English imported a lot of Indians, and the Fijians were not happy at all. Now there is a big divide in the country, and this is painfully obvious in the standards of cleanliness of the towns. Fijians take a lot of pride in their surroundings. I have spent a HUGE amound of time India - generally acknowledged to be the world's dirtiest country - and the Indian areas of Fiji are the same as India. Also, they infamous for being pushy salespeople. Fijians are very different.

It is not fair to lump Fijians in the same category as Indians.

I went to Fiji a few years ago now and it was wonderful. The people are so friendly and helpful. I plan to go back when Zack and my future children are older as I saw how fantastic they were with the kids. If u go along the coast to a resort (I stayed at the Hideaway) or to an island resort (I stayted at Matamanoa Island )u will be along way away from political thing. I didn't find Fiji dirty or expensive u will defently be able to afford it on your budget.

Then for our honeymoon DH didn't want to go overseas so we went to Arlie Beach snd it was fantastic and beautiful. We were able to go the islands for the days and to the reef etc. I had the best time.

When looking at going overseas for our honeymoon the travel agent that booked my fiji holiday sudgested Samoa which lookd beatuiful. \I was looking at a resort that rooms were built on top of the water. I think this would be in your budget too. Bugger DH wouldn't go overseas again.

I'd do some looking into it and speak to a travel agent about where is good at the time of year you will be travelling.

We went to Thailand and loved it. I have also been to Fiji and Hawaii is on my list. All three are very easy trips from Aust and would be able to fit into your budget. Again, speaking to an agent or looking on travel websites (www.travel.com.au and the like) will give you a good idea of prices and packages.

My husband thinks cruises are for old people who want to play canasta ( ph34r.gif ) so we've never done a cruise! I personally wouldn't mind one.

Since it seems your not going with the Children I would go somewhere romantic and relaxing biggrin.gif So definitely resort-style places, overseas would be Thailand (but go to the beach resort part) + Philippines have Boracay which is just beautiful wub.gif + Fiji + Hawaii...not sure how much it'd cost but I find Paris to be the most romantic city so if your budget would get you there, that'd be beautiful too.

If you don't want to go overseas I'd recommend Hamilton Island wink.gif

I have to say that the 2 pacific cruises I went on were fantastic!!! I loved every minute of them and want to do one again with Vaughan this time.

I think they are only boring if you let them be boring. If you get involved in the activities and go to the shows, they can be great fun. It's all up to you what you make it.

As for the other destinations, I haven't been to any of them though I would definately check out Thailand. You can get some really cheap flights and accommodation and I've heard it's a great place to visit.

um but yea bali was my favourite its a good cultural experience good shoppin and very very cheap food.

Fiji and Bali are both very cheap, I had friends go to Fiji and they loved it but it wasn't 5 star or anything. Bali is a bit more touristy and a party island so might not be what you want on a honeymoon.

Malayisa is also pretty cheap, we went to Sabah last year and it was beautiful! We stayed at a 5 star resort for the same sort of cost as you would pay for a standard place in Bali.

Chat to your travel agent, they can probably suss out some good deals, especially if it is your honeymoon, there are some good packages around.

I've been to Fiji and I loved it. Like someone said the Fijian's are lovely people, but the Indo-Fijian's (Indian) are pushy rude and dirty. You wont find many of them in the resorts or islands though. The Islands are relaxing and romantic.

We're going to Thailand for our honeymoon. To give you an idea of cost, ours was $4800 which included all flights, all transfers to hotels, travel insurance, 10 nights in Phuket at Merlin Beach Resort which includes breakfast, 2 nights in Bangkok at Indra Regent which includes breakfast and a full day tour of the tiger temple/river kwai. Lots of hotels have pay stay deals i.e Pay 5 nights stay for 10.

Vanuatu is somewhere else we looked into also.

Be aware with Pacific cruises that when you dock in a town the shops often hike the prices up. Friends went to Vanuatu for a month and said that when a cruise ship docked the prices often tripled in each shop so they learnt to avoid "Cruise Day". Therefore cruises can end up more expensive than just going to one of the destinations on your own.

I just got back from my very own elopement in Thailand and I can recommend it 100% -- I stayed in sawasdee villiage (off peak about $120-$130/night for deluxe garden room) and it was so AMAZING! If I went back to Thailand, I would stay there. They only have about 45 rooms and it's very boutique-ish.

It's a 5 minute walk to kata beach (one of the quietest and most underrated beaches in Phuket!!!!). They also have a spa on site - and tonnes of beauty salons across the road - you can get a 1hr massage for about $6-7 and a facial for about $10!! Amazing!!!

We did a few trips (picked up from the hotel and brought back in afternoon) but otherwise we just sat by the pool - and pool bar! - and had an absolutely amazing time!!!!

We just got back from our honeymoon in Phuket...it was amazing...and we spent all up approx $5500 includes airfarers, stay at Le Meridian, food, drink and tours. I highly recommend staying at Le Meridian!!!!! It was amazing!! Lots of free activities, you have your own private beach!!! It was heaven.
