Hi there, i am getting married in July 2009 and we have decided to go to The Cook Islands for our honeymoon..i have always wanted to go there but im not sure where abouts to stay, should we stay on the main island Rarotonga or head out to Aitutaki..which is a 3 hour flight from mainland and it is a little island on a lagoon completely surrounded by the ocean,
Im not sure if we should stay on Rarotonga as there are more things to do or head over to Aitutaki which is very secluded and not alot to do...they both sound gorgeous!
Has anybody been to either and what would you recommend?
And are there any resorts you would recommend?

Thank you for your help!!

We went to Raro for our honeymoon and stayed at Palm Grove. We loved it, and if I can answer any questions for you I will try to do so! We would have loved to go to Aitutaki as well, but ended up staying on Raro for the whole 10 days. Was great!

From what I could ascertain, there is very little do do on Atutaki except soak up the sun and beautiful views. Nice, but how long until you get bored?

Alot of the packages we saw had 3 nights on Atutaki and 5 nights on Raro (or whatever combination) It was REALLY expensive to get to Atutaki for those 3 days, so we spent the whole time on Raro biggrin.gif And spent a couple of extra dollars to have a stop over in Auckland instead.

Feel free to PM if you'd like some advice of what to do and where to go once you are there.

I recommend getting accomodation for the night you arrive (plane gets in at 1am) and the night you leave as it is a very long day if you don't have a hotel room to chill our in.

That is actually the law, if you are there, you have to have accommodation...

We made sure we are getting the flight that arrives at 3pm and the one that leaves at 4pm. No way I was arriving or leaving at some ungodly hour of the morning. Means a night in NZ on the way home but so much better than the 4am flight!

And yes, you have to have accommadation booked before you arrive, they don't like you just rocking up. Plus from what I hear it can be hard to get rooms at the last minute so you are better off booking as early as possible.

We also went to the Cook Islands for our honeymoon. We spent the first few days on Aitutaki and then about a week on Raro.

If you can I would definitely recommend going to Aitutaki. It is beautiful, and we thought nicer than Raro. There are a few thing to do, snorkelling etc, but they also do a lagoon cruise which was wonderful. You can hire scooters and go around the island etc. Also lots of nice restaurants and resorts to visit.

We wished we had spent more time there.

Let me know if you want any more info.

Amy.

That's the complete opposite of what we got told! We were advised to book by December/Jan for our June honeymoon since they have limited accomodation and you need to get in quick to get something as they can book out pretty far in advance. We booked in November and there we plenty of prices released so I don't see why you have to wait until December for them...

We spent 7 nights at about $1500 each (almost 4 years ago!) But I have seen simillar packages advertised recently for around $1600 pp.

Meals etc are a bit on the expensive side though as pretty much everything has to be brought in. Good news is their currency is equal to NZ so exchange is OK.
