I have actually just left Phuket this morning and am currently in Bangkok. Was just checking my emails and thought I would have a quick look on i-do.

We stayed at the Merlin Beach Resort, which is about a 5 minute taxi/tuk tuk ride from Patong Beach. We both loved Merlin Beach Resort - it has three pools, one with a swim up bar, four restaurants, and its own beach - though the beach was a bit rocky. Our room was lovely, they all have balconies, and it wasn't small. There are some massage places on the beach, I had a full body one hour massage for 300baht! (about $10.00). They also do your laundry cheaply for you - we only figured this out in the last few days though. Don't use the laundry service in the resort, it is quite expensive (i think this applies to all the resorts).

Patong Beach is a bit crazy and a bit smelly - hold your breath when you walk over the drains in the road. We did a fair bit of shopping and some of the store owners can drive you crazy but if you don't want to stop, or decide you don't want something, just keep walking or walk away. Definitely barter them though! We got three pairs of brand name sports shoes for $140.00 AUS.

Definitely go there, you will have a great time. Just be open, as the other girls have said, to some new experiences. If you are planning on going to Bangkok too though, I would definitely do this first - we got to Bangkok today and I am not overly impressed - I'm a bit scared to walk out of the hotel!! We are only here three nights though and then off to Sabah. biggrin.gif

We spent two months in Thailand and had a wonderful time. I preferred Northern Thailand personally but it really depends on what you want from your honeymoon, if you want to relax on the beach then southern Thailand is for you! We spent time all over so if you have any specific questions about it PM me, I would be happy to help.

hi all - sorry i haven't checked in for a while... we've finally decided - we're staying 4 nights at Siam@Siam in Bangkok and then 7 nights at the Hilton which is in Karon Beach, Phuket. We pay our deposit this Sunday. I have finally found a good travel agent smile.gif by staying an extra night in Bangkok we're arriving a day later in Phuket and can take advantage of a special deal that Hilton have going from November 2008. We're saving over $1000 and get an extra night in Bangkok thrown in biggrin.gif

For all those experienced thailand travellers - have any of you stayed in the Hilton? Was it good? And also is it much trouble to get from Karon to Patong and back again?

We came back from Thailand - Our Honeymoon, 10 days ago and we loved it. I had been before so new what to expect, but DH hadnt. It took a little for him to get used to but he really enjoyed himself as well.

We left 3 days after our wedding and travelled firstly to Phi Phi Island (by the time we got there we had been on the road/air/water for 24 hours! Not what you would want to do if you left the day after your wedding!. It was amazing though! We really loved it there, so relaxing and private (at our particular resort anyway). We then went to Phuket where we stayed in the heart of Patong, which for us was great as we had done our relaxing and were ready for the crazyness. We then moved onto Bangkok for the last of the trip where we did a couple of tours and went home.

Karon Beach I think from memory is the next beach over from Patong and as far as I can remember didnt seem too far away from Patong. 15 mins?

Decembergirl - can i asked which resort you stayed at in Phuket? I know a few of the girls have recommended Katathani and that's where I'm keen to stay however when I went to TripAdvisor there were some really mixed reviews - that site just confuses me even more

Sorry for the delay, I've only just come back to this thread. Yes, our stay was at Katathani and I can't recommend it highly enough. As I said, we're going back in June/July for another 10 days. The whole resort was stunning.

We stayed at Katathani as well, it is a beautiful resort and away from the hustle and bustle of Patong.
We did have an initial problem on checking in, we got to the resort at around 11am and our room was not ready so we had to sit around and wait for our "check in time" of 2pm, had we not been on a plane for the last around 13 hours (including one hour of sitting on the tarmac) I probably would not have been as pissed off but when I asked if there was absolutely any way of getting into our room to at least have a shower they told us we could open our suitcases in the lobby and go and have a shower at the shower in the public facilities the resort uses for the pool.
We mentioned to them also that it was our honeymoon expecting to have a bit of a fuss made of us (ok, maybe i'm being precious) but they then informed us they had no idea it was our honeymoon and pretty much acted like it was nothing (ok, to them it was nothing but they could have pretended to be a little excited and made a bit of fuss or something) not even a congratulations, just our checkin left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
We have also stayed at LeMeridien Phuket beach resort (pre Tsunami) and found it to be a stunning place to stay, it is also not right in Patong (definately a plus), has great pools and restaurants and facilities.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Becca I'm sorry to hear that you had such a crappy check-in at Katathani. We, on the other hand, had the complete opposite experience. Our travel agent had informed the resort that we were on our honeymoon. When we arrived (at 10:30 am) we were given lai's, taken straight to our room and half an hour or so later (when the porter brought our luggage to us) we received a note from the admin welcoming us for our honeymoon and a complimentary bottle of wine. Clearly we had the better experience so I'm sorry you didn't get this fantastic treatment too. sad.gif
Sometimes in an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale...
