Alex is cutting down to one sleep and is driving me nutty.

We have moved his morning sllep back to 10am, he'll sleep perfectly through til 11:30. I get him up , give him lunch etc. but then he's cranky by 2pm. Try to put him down for another sleep, just whinges and whinges and whinges, so far he has been whinging for an hour today in bed. I know he's tired, he gets these bratty tell-tale signs he's tired. He acts out, is deliberately naughty, cranky etc. I'm rather stuck, i know he needs more sleep, and I really want him to have an afternoon sleep, rather than a morning one, but I can't make him last any later than 10am.

I just know i'm in for a shitter of an afternoon.

We've had a bit of a battle on our hands with going to a whole new routine but I think we're finally there. This is what's working for us...

7am - wake up & cup of milk
7:30am - breakfast
9:30am - morning tea (usually yoghurt)
11:30am - lunch
12:00pm - 2ish - sleep
2:30pm / 3 - afternoon tea
5:30pm - bath
6pm - dinner
6:30pm - cup of milk
7pm - bed

Ditto. Cooper usually goes down at around 10am, thou over the weekend we were out and about and he had no opporunity to nap so went down for one sleep at around 12ish, this has continued onto this week!
I put him down at 10am as he is tired and whinging rolleyes.gif but he wont sleep! Just whinges for a good 40min! So then I put him back down at around 12.30 and he slept for nearly 2hrs biggrin.gif thou yesterday only 40min all day wacko.gif so the afternoon was horror town!

Our usual routine

7am milk
8 - 8.30am breakfast
10am sleep - well usually
11 - 11.30am when he wakes - snack
12- 12.30 lunch
12.30ish - sleep - if he wont sleep at 10am
2.30 wake and afternoon tea OR sleep if he slept at 10am
3.30 up from sleep and afternoon tea
5.30 dinner
6.15 bath
6.30 milk
7.00 bed

Maybe we are in transition to 1 day sleep?
Question is how do you keep your baby up till lunch time when they are so damb tired at 10am? Do they adapt over time?

I wonder if you got an answer to this Ems or whether it just sorted itself out? My little girl is so cranky tired in the morning that I can't keep her up past 11am but when I put her down for her sleep she wakes up after an hour ON THE DOT and won't be patted back to sleep. So I get her up and then she won't sleep the rest of the day which means she is only having an hour a day! When does this one sleep a day get longer?

mrsTM, Amy is the same. I can't keep her up past 10:30 most mornings and she will only sleep for a max. of an hour and then by 4pm she is feral. I hope she sleeps longer soon as it's driving us all batty...

Taylor is now 17 months and has been on one day sleep for maybe a month now or a bit less and we all love it! (previously did 2 day sleeps 1 nap, then 1 day sleep 1 nap).

She was the same as some other bubs, as she got older was taking forever to fall asleep at her afternoon 'nap' (nap being that I would not let her sleep longer than 45 minutes). But if she woke at a reasonable time and I felt she needed her nap, I still put her to bed. Most days she would spend anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes playing/chatting away to herself, but would still eventually fall asleep. I just thought, even if she only gets 15 to 30 minutes, it's a teeny b it of sleep that she does need.
Failing that, I would put her to bed earlier than 7pm.

Our routine now is;

7/7.30am Wake and sippy cup of milk
8/8.30am Breakfast
10am Morning Tea
12 Lunch
12.30pm Bed
2.30/3pm Afternoon Tea
5pm Dinner
6pm Bath
6.30pm sippy cup of milk
7pm Bed

Anyone else going through this at the moment. It is so damn hard. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go through this transition for another month of two.

Cate last week just started screaming for every arvo sleep. And I mean screaming the house down when previously she settled easily. So I have taken it as a sign she is ready for one sleep. I put her down at 11am but she is only sleeping for 1 hour on average. The lack of sleep is accumulating so she is now showing tired signs by 9am in the morning.

I don't really want to to and fro between sleep times as don't want to confuse her or stretch out the transition longer than it needs to be.

I just had to rock him to sleep in my arms, he was really upset sad.gif

His morning nap is around 8am, he gets up at 5:30am. maybe i should keep him up a bit later in the morning?

Bika

I would try stretching out the morning sleep a little. Andrew has always been a 5-5.30 riser which he is just getting out of. We dont put him down in the morning til about 10am, he then sleeps for twoish hours. We follow the SOS routine. Alot of babies rise early because they are either too cold, or overtired ie going to bed too late of a night. We have Andrew in bed each night by 7pm, also babies who rise early can also be lacking protein in their diet, we gave that a go by increasing his protein and he is now getting to a minimum of 6am

We have the same here Bika. As I said in my post Cate was screaming the hosue down for the arvo sleep. Have just switched to the 1 sleep but it is a work in progress. I don't put Cate down until 11am.

I would try a later morning sleep too. It will seem like a vicious cycle at first but it should help the early rising which will in turn help him stay awake later in the morning. I think at 11 months I was doing a 9:50 - 10am sleep time and Cate was waking at 6:15 - 6:30.

It sucks when they need 2 sleeps but won't have them doesn't it.

EKKK!! The last 2 days C will not settle for his afternoon sleep! He is so tired just wont sleep, he would rather chat and peel off the wall boarder grr! Yesterday he was feral by 5.30pm and an hour of whingie boy! His night sleeps have been off to - thinking teeth!

Maybe this is it? one sleep a day? ow i hope not laugh.gif the mood is not good. In saying that if this does become habit do you just push it out for an extra 15min over time. ie few days put him down at 10.15am then 10.30am and so on?

We have been doing 1 sleep for 2 weeks now. We started at 11am and her average sleep was only 1hr. Last Sat I pushed it out to 11:15am and we had 4 days of 1hr 15-30min. I will push it out again to 11:30am tomorrow and see how we go. That first week and a bit of shocking sleeps was hell on earth as she would only have 45min some days. I am hoping we have turned the corner for longer sleeps now but then she only had a 20min sleep at daycare today. Hoping that is not an ongoing thing.
