This might be long-winded and garbled, but please bear with me.
For the last 2 weeks Tom has been really fussy at the breast, he'll drink while I'm letting down then pull off and scream and not take it again (he behaves like my nipple tastes bad or something!) though he usually stops crying if I give him the dummy. This isn't every feed, but quite often, and especially the last feed of the night. I've been giving him EBM at the last feed after he refuses the breast so he doesn't wake up hungry in 2 hours time. He's usually happy enough with EBM in a bottle.
He cries after most feeds, and often arches his back in pain. He usually settles when we hold him upright, or with the dummy. He vomits quite often, sometimes a long time after a feed.
I thought maybe it was low milk supply, or that he gets frustrated because the doesn't come out quick enough after that first let down, so I spent a lot of time last week boosting my supply, and I definitely have more now.
I'm careful about not letting him get overtired, so I don't think it's that. I thought this sounded like reflux, but the CYH nurse said she thought he was hungry, and said to go to the doctor and get a script for domperidone/maxolon to boost my milk supply. She asked what my plans were re feeding and looked disappointed when I said I wanted to continue breastfeeding if possible. (Shouldn't she be supporting me to continue BF? ) He goes 5 - 7 hours between night feeds - would a hungry baby still sleep for 6 hours?
I'm worried because his weight gain was way down - he gained 200g a week for the first 4 or 5 weeks, but only 350g in the last 3 weeks. He has been feeding a bit better the last few days but still in pain, especially in the evenings.
What do you think? Does it sound like reflux or something else, or is this perfectly normal behaviour for a 7&1/2 week old? Am I just being silly because I didn't like the nurse and she fobbed me off? It's really hard to see him in pain and not be able to help!
