Full Version: QUICK C-SEC QUESTION?

If you have a C-sec, what methods do they get the placenta out? unsure.gif Do they yank it off the uterine wall, cut it out or what? huh.gif Can you leave it there and give birth to it later? Do they give you drugs or rub something on it so it just comes away? blink.gif

I'm writing my birth plan and want to know what the options are in the event that I have a c-sec... wink.gif

They gave me the Synto and then they remove it. A huge benefit of a C-sec is that they take everything out! All the gunk and crap.

I got to see mine being carried away on a plate this time. The benefit of not being exhausted from hours of non progressing labour. wink.gif

I have no idea - I didn't birth mine - I guess they just take it out.. interetsing to find out!!!

Hi Nathalie

I have had two c-sections and to be honest I have no idea how they remove it - but you definitely don't give birth to it later. They remove it somehow - I assume they just take it out.

I would be interested to know though.

Hmmm We seem to be stumped.... blink.gif

Maybe Mrs M can help out some more... What is this Synto? And do you know how they remove it excatly... Cutting, a hard pull, does it just fall off or some other method? ph34r.gif

Syntocin its a drug they give you to progress labour, it makes your uterus contract. I have had it with both pregnancies one for progression and the other to stop the heamorrhage (sp)
Mrs M
Don't know darl, But I don't think when it comes to surgery that you'll get to be overly pro active.

They just take it out! LOL

In a vag. birth you have to deliver it so it doesn't need to be cut out obviously.
The Synto ( Syntocinon is a drug, a hormone which is used to stimulate labour, and in the case of the placenta it aids in hastening the seperation of the placenta from the uterus.) So I'd say it just comes away.
Mine looked like one piece, ie didn't look cut or torn.

I can guarantee it doesn't hurt. And there will have been so much tugging etc anyway that you won't know they've removed it.

I didn't even get asked if I wanted the synto. You can say no to it in a Vag. birth some women prefer to let it happen on it's own.

But I'll assume that they just administer it in a cesear because they'd want you back in one piece asap.

Hope that helps more... Not an expert by any stretch of the imagination! laugh.gif

Ahhhhh... Got it wink.gif

Birthing a placenta doesnt hurt, well i dont think so.

Basicly they give you an injection to release the placenta then the midwife will tell you to lightly push a few times. Hard to explain really

Regarding your Birth Plan - if there are different methods of removing the placenta I'm not sure whether you would be able to choose which way they do it?? unsure.gif It may just be up to the doctor performing the surgery. I just thought I would mention it - I really have no idea about it - but I was never consulted about it. Regardless of how they remove it, you won't feel a thing!

I also don't know if you would get a choice with how you get stitched up. I had both my caesars in the same public hospital - with Ethan I had staples and Ella I had stitches - I was never asked which I wanted and I overheard the doctor saying during the op with Ella that he only uses staples when he's in a hurry! I don't know if that is the case in Private Hospitals or other states?

With the Syntocin - I was given it in my drip after the surgery to help my uterus contract back - I didn't realise it had anything to do with actually removing the plancenta unsure.gif

It's interesting that you can go through major surgery like this and have no clue of what they are doing blink.gif

I remember having this drip as well (and the stomache cramps that comes with it sad.gif ) but I didn't even think about what happens to the placenta until I read this post to tell you the honest truth.

I'm just trying to decide what my options are... In case I need a c-sec... Yes Drs will let you decide, its my cute little body... well no so cute anymore... very chunky at the mo' sad.gif If I found what they do I'll let you know! smile.gif
Vicki
Nathalie I think you will find as soon as the baby is birthed they put syntocin (sp?) in the drip (they may even do it slightly before) which makes the placenta come away almost immediately so they would give it a tug and it would pull away.

Yes Drs will let you decide

I wouldn't think the doctors would be prepared to let you sit on the table for 3 hours in the middle of a c-sec while your placenta "decided" to detach itself! wink.gif Risk of infection and all of that stuff.

Something to put on your list to talk to your OB about!
