Full Version: Transitioning to family foods

I have always been pretty happy with my DS' diet. It's not perfect but he eats from most of the food groups, and quantity is ok.

We slowly since D was about 10 month started transitioning him from the puree/ mash baby food for mealtimes to family, starting with breakfast, then lunch and now at 15 months finally are on dinner. Now, this is turning into a bit of a problem as it was dinner which is DS' main source of meat and vegies for the day. He has always eaten these ok in puree or mashed form.

Now for dinner I've been offering him our dinners in finger food form, in a mix of meat or vegies in pieces he can manage. He's been eating the meat, rice, pasta, bread or potato that's offered but won't eat vegies at all like this. I've tried both hot vegies and salads, he'll eat a piece of two and then refuse to eat. Worried about this I've been giving him some mashed food a few times a week so he's still getting the vegies, but I really want to get him to eat our meals.

Is it too early? Am I being unrealistic to expect him to eat pieces of sald or vegies unless their hidden? We eat a lot of meal where the vegies or salad is on the side so this may be a bit of an issue...

Cait really only started eating salad veg around 2 years. She ALWAYS ate tomato and might take a bite or two of cucumber or carrot but that was very rare. We did BLW too so not like she wasn't used to finger foods.

She did eat a lot more cooked veg but had been having all of those things from 6mths so wasn't really new to her.

What veggies do you usually give him? We might be able to think of something you haven't tried yet smile.gif

Simone - Emme won't have a bar of any kind of vegetable or salad item (except the occasional cucumber circle) unless it is pureed beyond recognition or is hidden in mashed potato or a cheesy sauce. I keep offering the veges and also give her the puree to makes sure she at least gets some in. I'm trying not to make a big deal out of it so she won't be able to "use" it later when she is being "willful" biggrin.gif .

My son started eating our meals around 12 months. He happily chewed down on everything, the only thing he won't touch is lettuce (I think he hates the way it feels in his mouth). Only recently has he started to reject green things rolleyes.gif

Lily is much the same, she will eat tomato and sometimes a bit of cucumber, but that's about it. I don't give her puree vegies, I just hide her vegies either in patties or pasta sauce. She will eat finely chopped vegies that I put in stir fry though.

We usually have-
in salad- lettuce, tomato, cucumber, shallots, olives. And potato on the side.
hot vegies- potato, pumpkin, corn, carrot, brocolli

We may just have to adjust our own menu a bit to start incorporating more hidden vegies.
He will try them but just spits them out because he doesn't like the taste on their own.

My little one is almost 15 months and is the same as yours, doesn't really go for vegies as finger foods. She will eat them grated and cooked into patties or quiches, etc that she can eat herself but not as individual pieces of veg. I just mash up the veg we are having instead and feed her that myself, then offer her the meat or pasta, etc as finger food. Every now and then I try the veg pieces as finger food alone but I'm not going to force her to eat it that way yet if she's not ready. Maybe you could just mash up what the family is having instead? Or cook up a mixed veg mash and freeze portions so that if you are having salad as a family, you can whip out and reheat the veg mix for little one?

This might sound really dumb and backwards but have you tried tinned veg?

I found this works quite well with Flynn and he's happy to have his veg as fingerfood. Yes they are not as nutritious as fresh cooked and as adults we know that tinned veg are quite soft and bland but it's a start. It's kind of a step between mush and the good stuff and Flynn will eat them straight out of the tin not even heated up wacko.gif not my ideal scenario but it gets veg in

If hubby and I are having carrots, Flynn gets tinned baby carrots as fingerfood (with some of our carrots hidden elsewhere wink.gif )

If Hubby and I are having corn, Flynn gets tinned corn kernels as fingerfood (with the good stuff hidden elsewhere)

If Hubby and i are having Mushrooms, Flynn gets tinned mushrooms as fingerfood (with the good stuff hidden elsewhere)

If Hubby and i are having peas, Flynn gets tinned peas as fingerfood (with the good stuff hidden elsewhere)

He's never had a problem with potato or pumpkin but if no veg are going in you can try this too.

Slowly we are mixing our own veg in so it's about half and half now and because he knows it's good he is starting to eat our fresh stuff first biggrin.gif

It's taken about two weeks and I think I might be able to not buy any tin veg next pay... I think i'll have a tin of peas, carrots and corn in the cupboard just in case though

Could be worth a try...
