DH and I currently have mobile broadband, which is proving to be very slow and not reliable. It's OK if just one of us is on the net, but as soon as we're both on, it's practically impossible to get even the most basic of webpages to load... and it's not cheap; I think we're paying $49 a month for 8GB.

Anyway, we don't have a landline at our house; we we have one, but we don't use it. We rely on our mobile phones and have figured that it's far cheaper than paying line rental, but now we're in a position where we are reconsidering our internet connection and really don't want to have to get a phone line connected, pay line rental as well as internet; it's just not worth it.

So I saw an ad on TV for Naked DSL - it showed it to be like having broadband through your landline, but it doesn't need to be connected, is this right? I know very little about it, and can't seem to get a great deal of information from google either.

If anyone here has it, could you please spare a few mins to educate a novice?

Many thanks smile.gif

Yep Hun I have naked and I swear by it. No home phone, just high speed Internet. It's great!

For companies I recommend tpg. I'm currently with Adam but am about to change to tpg as it's much cheaper

Hey hun, thanks!
The only thing that confuses me, is when I go onto the business' websites, it asks me for my phone number to check availibility in my area... but we don't have it connected and don't intend to. Do we need to have it connect initially?

I sent some email enquiries off yesterday and would you believe it, I am still waiting on a reply from all of them. Not overly impressed.

TPG and Adam were both on my list, as well as iinet... they all seem very reasonable price-wise smile.gif

The main difference between Naked and Regular DSL is:

Naked DSL uses the copper wires of your "unconnected" land line as a pure data service;

Whereas, regular DSL uses the copper wires of your "connected" land line as a voice and data service by splitting these services on the same line;

Therefore, you only need a connected land line if you also want to use voice.

If it's just data, then you can use Naked DSL. Or alternatively Cable or Mobile Broadband services which also don't require a connected land line.

As you don't have a connected land line (and phone number) - you will need to contact your ISP to find out if they offer Naked DSL in your area.

We have a naked ADSL2+ plan as the landline here isn't in our name, and we didn't want it to be.
We use Exetel, and get around 85 gig/month for something like $35 - awesome service!

We have nakes DSL, though we DID have a landline in the past.
Drom explained it better than I; we used to have a splitter connected to our landline, one cable connected the phone to make calls, the other provided the Internet by a wireless modem to the computer. When we got rid of the home phone we just got rid of the splitter and our internet still comes through the wireless modem.

I'd suggest just giving them a call and seeing what they say.

We loved to get naked tongue.gif

I don't know how it actually works (I leave that up to my husband) but I love that we don't have to pay line rental. The landline isn't incredibly reliable (when your electricity and/or internet goes down, or your router breaks, you loose your phone) but we use our mobiles for everything anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

It works so well for us!

We've got naked DSL with Optus. Our plan is 160GB for around $70 a month. We have a router connected to the wall socket and have set up our laptop and iphones to connect to it wireless. Its fantastic. We also have a Playstation which is also wireless and we stream movies to it that are stored on our lap top. The connectivity between all of these services is fast and very satisfactory. Our iphones connect automatically to our internet as soon as they are in range of the house, and so we can surf facebook for example without using our phone package allowance.
