I found once - don't ask me where! - a Bunnykins money box with Christening decoration/wording on it. It was a nice proper ceramic one - something that you can keep forever.
As to what to wear - I would think a nice dress or skirt and top would be appropriate. I don't think I've ever been to a Catholic service where it has been more dressy than that - they are usually in the morning so you don't want anything to OTT.

Pooky - I always buy (boy or girl) the gorgeous Swarovski Crystal Rocking Horse. It is something they can keep. Yes the boys might think its a bit strange but when they are older it might be something they can hand down to their own children. I gave my best friends two kids the same. Her little boy 4 years ago and her little girl in March. They both have the same rocking horse (only difference is his is gold and hers is silver as they now only do silver).
All my friends know they are going to get that and they love it as it really is a keep sake.
As for what to wear, given its getting a bit cooler, maybe a really nice dress with opaque stockings and nice shoes or a nice skirt & top with a cardigan.
I guess it also depends what your family is organising for afterwards.

Depending on how religious etc the parents are. When my DH was godparent for his nephew we bought him the nicest childrens bible with lovely pictures in it etc. and we wrote a message in it to him.
His mother loved it and thought it was such a great idea since the godparents are ment to bring the church into the childs life or something like that. If it was me recieving it (bc I am not that religious) I would be a little funny about it, but thats why my child isn't baptised too.
With what to wear, I don't think you have to go to out there just some nice pants/skirt and top would be fine, my IL are catholics and the things I have been to no one has ever been really over dressed.
The best gift my son got was a large plush version of Noahs arks- complete with two by two sets of animals that you can put inside the ark!
Not exactly nostalgic, but something he can play with, looks great on the shelf, and meant a lot to us as Christians

Nina got this Wedgewood Christening Bear - it's gorgeous and you can have it engraved.

Oliver was given some nice cufflinks from his grandparents with his initials engraved on them. I really liked that.
Also, we gave our nephew a hip flask with his initials engraved on them for his christening.
Neither handy for now but very handy for when they are older and a lovely keepsake.
Another idea is an old map / atlas of the city / place they live in.

Hi Louise
For J's first birthday I bought him a name frame for his room from:
http://www.sweetpgifts.com/We love it.
Even though he is 6, we chose some funky colours for the frame and lettering, so it looks great in his room still.
It would make a great christening present as it's a birth momento.
A little bit more expensive though, but the type of present that will be loved by parents too.

You could check out the Christian bookshop Koorong. They have some lovely children's books. Annabelle received a lovely Noah's Ark picture book with some 3D pictures. A gorgeous keepsake.
