Hi there

My 22 month old has been in his big bed for about 3 months now and we have a baby due in a few months.

Since graduating from the cot, Edward has worked himself into a routine where he is coming into our room and climbing into our bed many times each night. I can't let this continue when the new baby arrives!

We have just put a baby gate on his doorway in a sort of controlled crying strategy as he can reach the door handle easily. He is not happy but I think/hope in a few days he'll settle into it.

Does anyone have any ideas beyond this? Before this he was happily sleeping through the night most nights.

Thanks

We used the gate once he could reach the door.

The best thing I can advise is to keep putting him back in his bed in a very business-like manner - no eye contact, no conversation. The first time I would explain that I was goingto just keep putting him in his bed and there would be no more talking.

It seems harsh but in practice it felt okay.

I also felt it was very important to remember to give him as much cuddling and one-on-one attention during the day and bedtime routine as possible.

Good luck.

This is exactly what we did and they eventually understand there's no point getting up again.

we did a similar thing. a very calm business like - back to bed its bedtime - and carried back or walked back to bed repeatedly. she soon got tired of it. also got a bit of a relapse when new bubby came along but we just did the same.
